You Know What They Say About Love

Challenge: Idiom

Liner Notes

Here's my idiom #challenge contribution...

Yes, I have used a significant number of 'love' clichés here. And, yes, I've definitely overused the word 'baby'. Deal with it.

Wanted to do something fun and breezy in a #motown #pop sort of style, with a touch of #beatlesque chucked in for good measure.

It's all kind of throwaway, but I had fun making it and that's the main thing, right?!

Lyrics

They say love is blind
But I see you
The apple of my eye
And the banana too

Oh, it’s true
It’s all in the way I love you, baby
Yes, I do
You know what they say about love, now baby

I’m head over heels
You swept me off my feet
A love this real
Makes me feel complete

Oh, it’s true
It’s all in the way you love me, baby
Yes, you do
You know what they say about love, now baby

Baby, I feel a little lighter when you’re around
Maybe I feel a little better too
Daylight seems a little brighter when you’re in town
How sweet it is to be loved by you

You stole my heart
Like a thief in the night
When we’re apart
It just don’t feel right

Oh, it’s true
It’s all in the way I love you, baby
Yes, I do
You know what they say about love, now baby
Oh, it’s true…
Yes, I do
You know what they say about love, now baby

They say I love you

I love the horns and the bass line. What a great sounding track. It almost feels like a Chicago song musically (just needs a Terry Kath guitar solo to make it perfect) but the vocal is definitely more Ray Charles than Peter Cetera. I can't agree that this is 'throwaway' but it does feel like a diversion from some of your other things. Tasty, though.

The scatting and oohs at the beginning brought a big smile to my face before I realized what was happening. There's just an infectious sense of joy here. It's great how you can grab those clichés and make them feel fresh. You've got us floating on a serotonin cloud here

This song had me with the opening chords. Wonderful. Made me smile. Fun, fun song with a few terrific surprises. Gotta love it!

You are a master of making us all have a good time, David. Can't listen to this and walk away in a bad mood. The horns, the drums, the falsetto, etc., etc. -- so many great touches and all such fun!

Classic D. Taro here! This reminds me more of 70's Beach Boys than Beatles, this slays me in all ways, feels good and I hope this finds its way onto your next album. That falsetto note, damn!

David, there's NOBODY like you! This is so much fun, and has so much energy and fun in it! Sure, it's filled with cliches, but INTENTIONALLY, and that makes all the difference. It's a real upper, and who doesn't want that?

While growing up my mom listened to mostly Motown stuff. You nailed that sound. This made me feel very nostalgic. Great lyrics and your delivery and performance are always fantastic!

Great chorus on this. That falsetto "say" is lovely. The woo woo woo backing vocals in the bridge are great too. This is a really loving genre pastiche/tribute. It almost has a Macca-Mowtown feel somehow, which is high praise as far as I'm concerned, you know, a kind of "Got To Get You Into My Life" kind of vibe, can't really put my finger on why. Like that.. maj 7? ending. Can't go wrong with one of those.

supp man! before I go into this thanks for dying on "that hill" with me. Anyway mate this track has such a feel good vibe to it, the instrumentation is superb and the harmonised parts just sound soooo good. This could be a hit for sure.

What a voice...you could sing the most banal or even bananal lyric and imbue it with soul and authenticity...
Add a fantastic production and this is audio gold! 🥇
Yes, it was a cheeky banjo line in my versh of Stephen's lyric btw...thanks for noticing...😄

So gorgeous. Your song sparkles and lifts the moods. Beautiful singing and atmosphere. I was smiling all along. Thank you, you've totally made my day beautiful. It's clear you had fun and you gave us all so much pleasure of immersing us into the lights of love.

Oh, I'm just getting started on "baby"'s...

Great, great song. If I tried singing like that, I'd be hoarse for a week after. Terrific job! ❤️

David, you brought the camp to songwriting camp with this song. I'm just sitting back in amazement at what you've put before us. This is the best 3:16 that I've spent in a long time. (Actually 6:32 'cause I listened twice.)

I think if you can't use a lot of clichés in an idiom challenge, where can you? This is way too good for a throwaway! The big motown style arrangement is loads of fun and seems to be perfect for this kind of lyric.
[avatar]
Just casually putting this out there like “ya no big deal” I would unalive somebody so fast if it would grant me the talent and class to make a bop like this. So many things to love. So pro.
[avatar]
and the banana too ha ha and then slam dunk into motown vibes! blow away vox again! i think you need a band name for these songs. gonna think on that
[avatar]
This style fits you so darn well. Man, those vocals are the bomb! Love the whole upbeat feel and adorable message. Good stuff!
[avatar]
What an intro! The motown pop vibe is totally working for me! I love the first 2 lines "They say love is blind but I see you" - what a great response to the classic idiom. Wonderfully expressive and well stylized vocals bring your "just the right amount of sweet" lyrics to life. Cool change-up in the bridge. I also love driving triplet rhythm under the lovely bright trumpet in the intro and before the verses - it is such a cool verse setup. Pretty ending too.
[avatar]
The beat is very Motown but I hear a lot of Stax in the arrangement and the grit in the vocals. That bridge is just *chef's kiss*
[avatar]
Ha, ha, 'The apple of my eye / And the banana too'. You already had me smiling with the fun intro but those lines actually made me chuckle out loud.

Might be throwaway but it's also a keeper
[avatar]
Wow, Chorus is Motown 100%, not sure about the verses, but what does it matter, it's soooo gooood! Great in all aspects!
[avatar]
Oooh yes, definitely getting the Tom Jones feel. This is so fun! The production and energy is great, and love how you're really leaning into the vocal. The Beatles-iness on the chorus is a great, fun touch. And your falsetto is *chef's kiss*
[avatar]
What else rhymes with baby, well baby of course, not a problem! Great song and it just makes me smile and tap my foot, energised me to race off and walk the dogs. I got Tom Jones too 👍

@val
Motown! That's what I want to do, but don't know how to create it. This is cool. Great raspy vocal delivery with a really energetic track.

@aneil
Great Track very "Tom Jones" fell really fun and really one to make you move!
[avatar]
“the apple of my eye and the banana too” is my favorite line. this song is amazing, perfect even. this feels like it’s a song that’s always been a big radio hit. these vocals are killer. man i love everything about this one
[avatar]
@sbs
Love that opening - whatever those words are - have no clue how to spell them - lol! You can't say baby too many times in a song like this. Love it, of course!
[avatar]
the chorus is solid motown, but the verses tend towards a more soulful otis redding approach. its a highly entertaining and enjoyable track that proves there is no style you cannot master and add your voice to.

@cts
This ain’t no throwaway, you Charlatan! I’m drinking coffee and wondering how I haven’t hurled myself out of the window here at the office (it’s a co-worker thing). So many ideas to mine from this. I guess you know what I’m going to ask next don’t you? You do, don’t you? Yes - email is still the same. You know the drill, my man. Love this to the moon and back. Thanks for the inspiration.

You've nailed this style. Great catchy tune, cool instrumentation and lovely harmonies. Great stuff!
