Greetings, FAWMers!

I've been playing in bands since high school - Malocchio, Atomic Bus, Do Not Resuscitate, The Code Blues Brothers, The Curbfeelers, The Retractors, January Hill, Those Guys Over There, Too Many Beepers, SutureSelf, the Porch Pirates...and more one-off bands and open mic collaborations than I could count. I've spent a lot of the past year composing scoring and recording the musical "The Other Christmas Show", which will have it's world premiere at Theatre III in Acton, MA. (Where a lot of the movie was shot). More information at: https://www.smokingbottleentertainment.com

Having grown up with Classic Rock, that's my main influence, but warped by gigs as a dee-jay playing disco, country and R&B stations, some really remote classical piano training and open ears. Speaking of open, let me know if you'd like to collaborate. I'm not sure if any of the collaborations from past years are still posted but we can always create new ones!

For the tech geeks (and I know you're out there), everything these days is recorded on a desktop Mac with GarageBand using a Mackie EM91CU USB mic and DI's or MIDI for everything else. Keeping it simple - although I still have a Tascam 38, a big board and fancy mics and pre's, I can get better results in less time staying "in the box". And when you're trying to do 14 songs in 29 days, who has time to rewind tape?

Catching up here on comments...thanks much for stopping by "Common" - solidarity fellow scientist! What crazy times we are in! You asked about the flugelhorn hashtag...I tried but I don't think it's an official one. We just uploaded another one last night and I hashtagged it #trumpet. If you liked the flugely sound go check that one out - "Everyone Has a First Heartbreak" . And I'll have another protest song coming out that's a lil bit angrier later this week once my husband lays down the bass

@kayo
Thanks for the nice words on Reverend Blue Jean!

Thank you for your comment and for spending your time with my music.

thanks for the listen on my song, Wild like an Animal for the zoo skirmish. Really appreciate your thoughtful comments. I'm really enjoying your songs.

I guess things are slightly better.... Though we have a few dickheads trying it on

Hi, thanks for unzonging Flailing :) @alain_the_chef wrote the original words and he’s ok as far as I know so mostly imagined I guess. I should have brought a better mic away with me, the plastic mic is just that one of those with the wire attached weighs nothing and generates a hiss. I shall now dive into your enormous FAWM output - how do you find time?

Thanks for your comments on my song "Pebbles" . Really appreciate them . On the technical point the "synth sounds" on it are from a Boss Reverb pedal plus a digital delay, so it was all played live on my Acoustic guitar . It can provide a great bit of orchestration ! I thought I was doing well at 8 songs , but then saw you have 25 so have some catching up to do !

Hi, I emailed you 🎵

Ah!! Someone who knows the horrors of an anechoic chamber! This has made me happier than it really should! I spent a lot of time in them when I was at college - I did a degree in acoustics - and actual, true silence is horrific! And they're not even completely silent, just very, very nearly silent. I found them really disconcerting and discombobulating, and they used to make me dizzy, as my brain was sucked out of my ears. People that want silence, really don't...!

WOW! Congrats on hitting 25 songs so far! That's so awesome!! Thanks for all your kind words you left on my song "You Want a Woman" I also thought it was romantic and thanks for calling it a "keeper" :) I hope to make a few more keepers before the month is out. Cheers again to you for being so epic!

Thank you for the kind comments on "Hold the Line"! Much appreciated!

Hey, I guess we're near each other. I live in Arlington and grew up in Maynard.

Thanks for having a listen to In 1965 and your generous comment. Really made my day.

Thanks for your comment on "If Wishes Were Poolboys" -- I definitely would hand out "Be My Poolboy" conversation heart candy.

I've not had any issues with your stuff, but I have come across people posting AI did the thing the lyrics and frankly, its majorly demoralizing. I mean maybe it wouldn't hit so bad if I wasn't in a bad place mental health wise, but, AI can release radio ready with no effort, its scary and sad.

I didn’t want to let the cat out of the bag, but YES! To all the questions you posed! I actually just saw Paul shovelling out a senior’s driveway out here in rural Ontario today, he’s such a Mench!

Wow, I'd never imagined rap and hip hop connecting. Let's try, see what happens :) Would you like MP3 or Wav file?

Okay, so "Mean Spirit" is a total home run and all in seriousness I literally cannot believe how good it is. It just sounds like a classic already. What an incredible skirmish. You're a genius 🏆

Oh, wow. You came back for a listen to Come to California--I'm so thrilled. Thanks for your generous and encouraging words and for saying that my singing might have hints of those famous singers. I like your choices--coulda been much worse--like maybe Ringo mixed with Frank Zappa & Leonard Cohen 🤪.

Many thanks for the kind comments about Memories of Me. I loved that line of @billwhite51 's also. Proud to have had the chance to showcase his lyrics.

Thanks for the feedback on "Under the Overpass". I agree with you, I need to keep flipping and twisting the over/under in the lyrics. I had it in mind but decided to push it out the door to make the skirmish deadline. Now I have time to refine!

Yep - I’m a bit worried about that - but in reality who in their right mind would want to invest their musical talent and time into my lyric about Frutiger Aero??? 🤣 and in some ways it also takes from other things - and many have used loops and clips and electronic pieces for years - so not sure where any clean lines are - I do think it is good/important to disclose Ai use though - not sure all do or all agree with me. Sorry if I led you down a dark path to Suno AI as it is ridiculously addicting.

Thanks for comment on "Never Wake Up" the piano is live recorded but from an electric piano: it's my workhorse Privia PX-350m
[avatar]
Yes… I don’t know where this is all going - as a primarily lyricist, I don’t know that any musicians will want my lyrics as they can have AI write and edit any words they want. I dabble with music but can’t play music or express my lyrics how I would like as my musical abilities are elementary and my vocals are pitchy and nasal- so when I sing my own lyrics I can never create or deliver the music I hear in my head. So AI has been a great way for me to try to express my words… but I much prefer working with live collaborators…

Hi

Thank you so much for commenting and liking the lyrics/song. Thanks again.

Sincerely

Thanks for you nice comment on The Ladies Must Swing. I put my lyrics into the AI Suno app and told it what I wanted to hear (e.g. 30s-40s big band sound, upbeat dance swing jazzy feel, alto female vocals, etc…) I tried about 6 different versions and remastered the one I liked best. I had no idea if the AI would generate the big band sound I wanted but after playing with prompts and guiding the style and sound I wanted it came up with something pretty close to what I had in mind.

hi raspberry. thanks for leaving a comment on my song "keep it real". for your questions - it's capo on the 5th (not on the 3rd). cheers, i see you are having a great fawm, enjoy it.

To answer your question about the effects on the CBG. I record old school using a Boss BR 80 (an 8 track that fits in the palm of your hand). It has a range of pre-set effects. The one I used was supposedly a reproduction of the sound used by the Beatles on Revolution.

Thanks for the suggestion about People's Music Network. I'll check it out. It looks like there's an event later this month in NYC, and one in the Spring in Groton, MA.
[avatar]
Thanks for your comment! Are you by any chance familiar with People's Music Network? They are heavily clustered in NY and Mass and are an amazing network of activist singers. Amazing ppl 💚

Thanks for listening to my song! Before I got to your songs, I fell down a rabbit hole with smoking bottle. So much enjoyed the 10th anniversary vid - what a great story! Love how it gets real in the middle. I suspect many of us here have had a similar reckoning. Looking forward to checking out the movies!

Thanks for the kind words

Hey thanks so much for your comments! Honestly the vocal inspiration is probably way more obvious to me. There is apparently something to the John Waite comparison because I have heard that one before about me. In this case at times I was hearing a Jerry Reed thing.

Thanks, Mark. I'm on a bit of a band hiatus now and spent the last year composing, recording and scoring music for "The Other Christmas Show" which will premiere at Theatre III in Acton, MA. Tix still available!

Epic Hero was a superb skirmish. Are you still performing in MA?

Thank you so much for your beautiful comment on my skirmish piece. I'm looking forward to hearing your gorgeous music. Have a great FAWM!
