Love Isn't Any Fun

by @gwynjones · @greengrassgirl

Liner Notes

I received these excellently well honed lyrics from Patty and went for something of a #kindatechno #pop style...
Thanks to Patty and thanks for listening...

Patty says: When I wrote this lyric, I was thinking of a fun, pop style, and I knew Gwyn would be just the one to make it happen. He was a pleasure to work with, and he works FAST!

Lyrics

Lyrics: © Patty Lakamp

I’m giving up on love
I’ve finally had enough
The benefits of benefits
Aren’t worth the other stuff

I’m partial to the part
That happens at the start
But things go wrong and then it’s gone
I just don’t have the heart

It’s over
It’s done
Love isn’t any fun
It’s great at first
Till the bubble bursts
Then it’s over
It’s done
Love isn’t any fun

I start to feel attached
Then things get out of whack
Thought I’d stay, but I run away
Never coming back

I thought about a cruise
But really, what’s the use
A week or ten, it’s gonna end
And I’ll still have the blues

It’s over
It’s done
Love isn’t any fun
It’s great at first
Till the bubble bursts
Then it’s over
It’s done
Love isn’t any fun

I need a better plan
To be a happy man
Stop being so quick to think we click
Don’t rush into romance

I know how this will end
So why should I pretend
The same old story, grief and glory
Lonely days ahead

It’s over
It’s done
Love isn’t any fun
It’s great at first
Till the bubble bursts
Then it’s over
It’s done
Love isn’t any fun

The thing is, I don’t listen
I’m a man in love with women
I’ve said it all before
And still come back for more
Then…

It’s over
It’s done
Love isn’t any fun
It’s great at first
Till the bubble bursts
Then it’s over
It’s done
Love isn’t any fun

Love isn't any fun

What an AWESOME collaboration from two fantastic FAWMers!!!

These lyrics are so dang good! What a great love-just-ain't-worth-it song! So much TRUTH and so cleverly laid out. Excellent work!

And if you want something done up RIGHT, complete with catchy melody, modern stylings and superb vocals, well, you give it to Gwyn! Your music brings these words to life and just delights! Incredible work on this!

This brilliant collaboration is one of the things I LOVE about FAWM! What a treat to listen to! It entertains me AND inspires me to try harder and write better songs! Who knows, maybe I'll write one this good some day!!

This is a great marriage of great music and great words. I've said great too much. But it is such an anthem. I love the nagging tune of the verse, and the beautiful harmony in the chorus. Oh, this synth solo is very enjoyable. Then into a nice bridge section - and back into the storming chorus. I love the tripping pattern to the second half of the line that comes out of those words. It feels really nimble. The words are great because they are plaintive and funny, and they kind of beg for a fun musical accompaniment. Absolutely love this one. Sorry I've been slack at reciprocating, I'm in a reciprocation nosedive this FAWM.

Really fun techno pop tune - some great hooky stuff going on with that chorus! 1980 vibes for me. The synth solo around 1:45 is satisfying.

This was too much fun! (-: Poppy, energetic, totally compelling.
Such well constructed, enjoyable lyrics and the instrumentation, vocals, and effects are thrilling. Tremendous collaboration, you too. (-:

Catchy! I’m going to be singing “it’s over, it’s done. Love isn’t any fun” all day!

Infectious number. Great idea and lyrics to match. "great at first till the bubble bursts." Nice :) and all wrapped up in an 80s dance package!

I do love an honest, if somewhat cynical lyric! And this is a great musical take on the lyrics, partially because the music is kinda fun, even if love isn't fun. I liked the drawn out "loo------ve" at the end and the overall tech-y/80's vibe. Sounds like someone is in love with all the feelings and maybe not so much the people who start them, lol. It's a great character portrait, really!

This is an absolutely fabulous collaboration! I love the rocking energy and expressive emotion in the music. The layered vocals and cool instrumentation works really well to drive the attitude of the lyric perfectly!

Brilliant song and collaboration. Great lyrics, catchy and clever. Brilliant write which is inspiring and is designed to ne in a song and this lead to great music, singing and playing. Fantastic music, happy, upbeat and catchy. Great singing and playing. You are a brilliant team where each contributes greatly and effectively. Love your song 🎵 ❤️😊

At FAWM, I really pay attention to the lyrics. And these are some good ones. "Love isn't any fun" is catchy! Nice break and subsequent filter. Excellent collaboration!

oh yes, dancing here on Saturday morning and things are immediately looking great. I see 80s disco ball, lycra, an umbrella in my cocktail... ! Love how this well-produced pop piece is spiced up with sudden chromatic switches. And the lyrics deliver!
[avatar]
Ooh some 80’s Soft Cell vibes here which perfectly fits these tightly crafted lyrics by Patty. I like the rat-a-tat of the chorus phrasing and the belting BVs. Wicked keys solo in that mid section. I like the mega phone vocal effect too. Deffo something different from the master Mister Jones!

Just had a listen... Not what I expected... but it never is! Great production and performance! Your talent and skills are truly top notch! Love the driving beat! Write on!
[avatar]
Haha! Patty's lyrics are so great here! @greengrassgirl is quite a pleasure to work with isn't she?! @gwynjones did such a great job with the melody and the track on this! Great collaboration! Thanks for sharing!

WoW! Killer write patty. So snappy and polished, reads right off the page... Sweeet! At work and will listen tonight... you and Gwyn always knock it out of the park!
[avatar]
Maybe love isn't any fun, but this song definitely is. Great partnership and great result.
[avatar]
apologies for my comment... i don't even know what i meant! I listened again, and yes technogwyn for the win! And yes catchy baby! (i did clearly listen to it and agree with myself!) Great lyrics for an upbeat catchy song. love the hook and the delivery at the very end is a perfect ending.

Nice work on this one. I agree with @jonmeta below that it's important to find the rhythm in the lyrics and further agree that you nailed it here, matching the words with a neat, poppy-techno backing. As for those words, they're full of good rhymes. I particularly like the line, "I'm partial to the part that happens at the start" which does a good job of laying out the singer's problem.
[avatar]
Ditto, @jerrypettit about that line being killer. Patty's an incredible lyricist and Gwyn's really upped his outside-the-box game with this one. Catchy and clever!

@sbs
How fun is this?! You can sing anything. Harmony is super cool! Dancing in my chair - oh yeah! I'd be dancing on my feet if I wasn't tethered to my headphones.
[avatar]
The first key to great songwriting (I think) is to find the rhythm in the lyrics and let that tell you how the music should go. Glyn, you've created a master class in matching lyrics and music. Every line is satisfying. Of course, Patty gave youlyrics with a naturally catchy, bouncy rhythm to them.
[avatar]
Wasn't expecting this poppy tune, nice collab! Very catchy chorus!
[avatar]
You two had me at "The benefits of benefits Aren’t worth the other stuff".

@greengrassgirl knows I always love her lyrics and there's NO ONE around here singing better than Gwyn. Great collaboration! ❤️
[avatar]
Certainly a fun song about love not being any fun. Love your use of dynamics on the verses: the quiet second two lines are a perfect touch
[avatar]
Yup hoppy poppy for sure! You captured musically I reckon exactly what Patty was thinking, nice structure to this and the changes are big but seamless. Nice one!
[avatar]
Oh this is a bop - I am chair dancing! I really like the lyrics - it feels more take a break from love rather than anti-love - we know he will try again once he recovers - and we really feel for this guy. Love the structure and the catchy rhythm in the lines The melody is just perfect and I like the fast lyrical pacing. It is just the right vibe for a song like this. Super cool outro! What a nice collab and great song.

catchy baby not sure of accessing files but David Taro's post seems to sum up
[avatar]
Definitely unexpected and definitely fun. Nice changeup pitch Gwyn. You pull it off well. Patty's lyrics set this up well. It's timely (at least seems that way) and playful.
[avatar]
Oh I live this vibe! Awesome match up! Great song that makes me want to move!
[avatar]
#technogwyn. For the win. It’s got crazy Pet Shop Boys/Erasure vibes. And like Bill says, it is actually a whole heap of fun. Love the bubbling bass, the staccato vocals and that little oriental detour in the instrumental section is splendid. ‘Partial to the part’ is a lovely turn of phrase from Patty. Awesome collab.
[avatar]
What awesome lyrics and music ~ bravo to you both!!! Just what I needed to lift my spirits, energizing and so enjoyable. All of a sudden I'm not feeling so bad about that date not working out a couple of weeks ago :-)
[avatar]
considering that the song is about love not being any fun, you sure take the route with the most fun to get there. this is a ride on the disco train thats going to open up all kinds of doors of fun before dropping you off on heartbreak avenue. its been a a bone-crackin, finger snappin, toe-tappin' rise while it lasted. can i go again for half price?
[avatar]
What just happened here?? Gwyn doing pop. Awesome and more awesome. This could have been a country song, but I am all in with the pop rendition. You guys can do anything. Love you both!
[avatar]
Great stuff, proper good collaboration and a head nodder too! I could hear the Pet shop boys doing this, but not as well...
[avatar]
Killer song..... way to go.
