When We Lived By The Sea

Liner Notes

Bill sent me these gorgeous lyrics at the start of the month, but initially I really struggled to write a melody that felt right. You know when you can’t quite wrap your head around the cadence of the lines... anyway, what you hear is the third treatment that I wrote for it - loosely inspired by some comments from Bill about Bob Dylan’s Infidels album, which I’ve always loved the sound and production on. Thank you, Bill, as ever, for sharing such excellent poetry.

Lyrics

Two yellow moons
Against a graying sky
Was all we hoped to be
In day as well as night
floating close to paradise
in the time of jubilee
When we lived by the sea

The sky slashed to ribbons
In broken rainbow dyes
We watched the cargo ships come in
Through burnt and sun closed eyes
Like birds between the blossoms
Along the limbs of trees
When we lived by the sea

why why did we leave
behind the things
we could never retrieve
the happy days
when life was gay
when we lived by the sea

The leaving ships sank slowly
beneath horizons line
Some seeking a golden fleece
That cloaked an ancient shrine
Gone long past the buckled waves
Of actuality
When we lived by the sea

why why did we leave
behind the things
we could never retrieve
the happy days
when life was gay
when we lived by the sea

The horses walked the railroad track
Above a town perched high
And when the waves came crashing in
We climbed the grassy sky
Collecting bits of coral
On the bottoms of our feet
When we lived by the sea

why why did we leave
behind the things
we could never retrieve
the happy days
when life was gay
when we lived by the sea

Nice imagery. Great arrangement and delivery. Definitely has that Dylan phrasing and 80s-era production style. Great collab!

Love the lyrics + vocals. The guitars are sweet! This song is somehow comforting. Great collab here!

Never listened to Infidels. Just did, and sure nuff can hear strong production and instrumental influence. Guitars far left and right. Strong bottom beat, steady bass, center soulful voice, smooth organ. You got it. Lyrics too, Bill, imagery and nostalgia spice in just the right dosage.

What an honor to have David Taro be the one to commemorate such a moving story in your life. I loved the repetition of When we lived by the sea. Even though many of us have never been there, you both took us there with this beautiful song.

Oh wow, this is such an amazing song! What a fantastic collaboration, with lyrics that resonate universal feelings, and a flawless production. Really love that chorus, it goes straight to the heart.

Such a vivid lyric and cool tune. Excellent! And I hear you about Infidels, a brilliant record.

Your smoky powerful voice, the background vocals, the organ, the guitar solo! This all works together in a brilliant way! Lyrics drawing pictures in my head!
Sad and beautiful and full of longing!

Even if I didn't know the backstory, this is a poignant lyric and an engaging song together giving a slightly melancholic but still live magic. David, the melody is indeed magic and the production just so good. Inspires me to get off my sorrowful backside again.

The images and feelings expressed in the song are beautiful and poignant. The music -with the wonderful guitar and gorgeous expressive vocals over the great organ and hooky rhythms - works brilliantly. Really love how the hook is delivered. Fabulous collaboration!

Love the smooth laid back vibe of the arrangement.

Gone long past the buckled waves
Of actuality

What a great line. Very endearing lyrics performed beautifully.

I listened to this a few days ago and for some reason i much have forgotten to hit
the "submit" button for my remarks. Solid track- music and production from Mr Taro. The happy but reflective lyrics are brought to life by David's choice of music and I am glad he persisted and finished the track. Great collab

wow, i love the soulful vocal delivery on these words! the choices you made with the phrasing just light up my brain.

lyrically, i appreciate being lulled into thinking this would be another nostalgic song about another seaside town for precisely one verse before being like "wait. this song is about an evacuation" (perhaps it is?) (or perhaps that's what my fears conjure, living as i do on an island in the age of climate change) ... i'm not strong on the classics of ancient greece but i perceive something of them here, maybe if i boned up i'd understand on another level. ignorant as i am, i still find the story compelling!

Amazing lyrics indeed and you have really done them justice. Love the mythology references.

This hovers over the masterful/masterpiece line...I'm going with the latter...two titans of creativity at their peak and bloody hell! In any sane universe, this would be in any top discerning curator's ultimate playlist...
I truly hope this reaches as wide an audience as possible because it thoroughly deserves to...🤞

Wow, I’d love to hear the other two attempts as well, cause now it feels like this is the only way these lyrics could ever flow. I like the choices you make about what to stretch out syllables and compress others. There’s this interesting way that the specific details matter so much and not at all. That really it was the living together that matter - where every it had been. I like the way the music captures that comfort and leaves the listener to imagine the grief that comes from having this all live in the past.

@sbs
Those drums really snap! Vocals are always a treat! Brilliantly written lyrics!

I think you've found a perfect musical approach for Bill's beautifully crafted lyric. Your phrasing on the vocal is simply terrific and I love the whole delivery. Dylan should be so lucky to be able to sing like this. Great listen!
[avatar]
This is a really nice collaboration! David’s vocal performance is evocative of Bill’s own way of singing, which makes the song feel even more connected to the lyrics. The music and lyrics blend together beautifully, creating a nostalgic and dreamy atmosphere. Great work, both of you!

Bill's lyrics always seem "Dylanesque" to me--so I'm not surprised you went in that direction with the music AND THAT VOCAL!! Pretty darned good Dylanesque vocal. Great collaboration, you two! ❤️

O ya. The music bed is so lush. The guitars are so silky and the drum track has a lotta snap then there’s that angelic choir that lives in your mouth. How all them notes and harmonies fit in there, bub? The solo tone is aces.

Bill is a treasure. Always. His writing is so diverse and visual. A true artist. Just letting life pour from his pen.

Beautiful song, definitely had me swaying. The layering of all the parts is masterful, and the background vocals are fun. Hard to believe that you didn't write the lyrics because it just feels so natural. The lyrics are great as well. Just a knockout job, great collab.

Excellent delivery! very clever seeing you bend this lyric to your will without losing its power! very fine collab.

David, I don't know what you abandoned before arriving with this interpretation of Bill's superb lyrics, but I would judge that this is the one worth keeping. Thanks for continuing the search until perfection arrived.

Fantastic music and melody give a real life to Bill's lyrics. The final refrain line for each verse is a great hook.

3rd time is definitely the charm! I think longing for some magical time in one's memory is almost universal and the music captures that feeling from the lyric. Well done!

Very beautiful song with nostalgic lyrics about happy times some time ago. The lyric could lead to many different interpretations and I really love your sunshine feel in the music, singing and playing. Happiness comes across and the feel of the times when life by the sea was so beautiful. Your song is very visual and it would grace a very beautiful romantic movie. Love the lyrics, music, vocals, playing, instrumentation and recording. Third time lucky :)

Masterful work by David in these lovely lyrics. I particularly like the repeating refrain. It does have a bit of a summer feel to the instrumentals.

Loving the layered guitars. Well the third time was the charm - your melody is just perfect for Bill's lyrics. I especially like the musical treatment on the title line at the end of the chorus - and that descending bass underneath is so good. I also like the pause before the title line in the verses. The song feels like swaying back and forth - on a boat - or just watching the wave roll in. I could listen to this all day and was sad when it ended. Fantastic melody, arrangement, instrumentation and production. What a collab - well done David, and beautiful lyrics Bill!!

Okay, I really felt that this is one that demanded to be read first, so I could find my own cadence and rhythm. It has its own music. To be honest, I'd kind of like to sit with it in silence. It's all so good: climbing the grassy sky, collecting coral...on your feet. Yes!

Now the music. This is one of those songs that keeps getting better as you yield to its insistent beat. I can't get enough of you singing "when we lived by the sea." And the way you lead up to those lines is magical as well. Of course, everything about a David Taro song is top notch, so it scarcely bears mentioning.
