Liner Notes

Let's get cracking with some #nerdfolk on the 8 string baritone #ukulele. There was a conversation a couple of days ago on mastodon about holes in doughnuts (as of course there would be) and so naturally because I was procrastinating I decided to research the history of holes in doughnuts. I learned, for example, that they were probably invented by a Captain Hanson Gregory while working in a ship's kitchen, to help them cook more evenly. I learned so much that I decided it deserved a song, so I made a note of it for later.

Anyway, when it came to actually writing it, it turns out the song's not really about that. More about having success too early in life. How can you top inventing the hole in the doughnut after all?

(I've no idea if the rest of the world knows what polo mints are. All that matters here is that they're the source of what will probably be my most excruciating rhyme all summer. Peaking too early myself, there. But, hey, there's three months to go, so who knows?)

nice concept for a daft song. lovely sound and performance as always, i will stop saying that bit as it is always a given! lovely plaintive cry with a big dollop of silliness. oh yeah cool harmonica too.

I am so far behind in listening that everything has been said! Love learning obscure history from you Edwin and look forward always to your songs.

Oh man this is so great. Love the folk feel and how you turned something so oddly specific into something relatable and catchy. Off to listen to parts 2 and 3 now!

I would expect nothing less than a song about an obscure fact and then to have to make it be about something completely different. Excellent start!

Your recording is sounding more robust too! Upgrading your equipment?

Holy hole in a donut, Batman. This is quite niche, and I love it. I enjoy how it sounds like a serious minor key song at first and...can be taken seriously, I guess, but mostly it's faux serious, and I am completely fine with that. ๐Ÿ˜€ So off the wall, but so you. Very nice start!

@mikeb
Well, of course, you have to keep 'inventing' (or writing more songs)!!

Fun song. To add a little fact to this information. The doughnut originates from the Netherlands, the whole was invented by an American indeed.

Fun song with a good sound. I also enjoyed the harmonica addition.

(However, the world does provide lots of opportunities for people who put holes in things. ๐Ÿ˜„ )

Fun and a bit educational. Nice solid playing! Yup I know polo mints! Good clever start. And a nice bit of harmonica

Hi Edwin,
I now know more than I did a few minutes ago and found the song greatly entertaining and deftly delivered...

The man who invented the filled doughnut must have thought Captain HG was a "duh "nut" - "How do you fill that, the fool!" ๐Ÿ˜‰
Fun song to kick off your 50/90 - great to see you are off the blocks!

The lesson Iโ€™m taking here is that I need to get on Mastodon, if this is the kind of chat youโ€™re privy to when there. Really like how youโ€™re teasing out an emotional theme too, rather than just doing a fact song, brings it to life. And nothing wrong with the Polo rhyme imho, works for me!

The first 50/90 song I've listened to this year, and a good start! Even before the song was over, it got me wondering who invented the hole in the bagel, just because I'm that way. A couple of reliable-looking articles tell me that the bagel with the hole is much older, and its inventor is truly forgotten. So your song applies even more to that person โ€” who, by the way, was a Pole, so there are opportunities for some more rhymes.

very clever how you dont mention the hole until the second third of the song..then delay the revelation that the hole is a donut hole. the guitar and harmonica are strong and propel the song in a most delightful way.

It's always a bonus when I can learn something new here! I believe he may be a personal hero of mine...
A jaunty wander through (a particularly narrow niche of ) history.
(bonus harmonica solo is always a win in my book)

I love learning random facts from songs. This is fun and informative. Nicely done

So low/Polos? ๐Ÿ˜€ Do we need to ask you to leave already?

Seriously, I love this. What a fabulous and niche topic for a song. And that harmonica is going strong!

Great sound of your baritone uke and wonderfully quirky, educational, and insightful lyric! Lovely flow of the melody beautifully delivered lesson to us all!
