Liner Notes

#political This song is based on a template by a very well known songwriter, and while I don't usually write songs that track their inspirations so closely, when I thought of how that idea could be adapted to the current political climate, I couldn't 'unsee' it, and had to do this one first. (who is that songwriter? well, he was recently portrayed by Timothee Chalamet in a movie... ) Hopefully its at least somewhat its own thing, and of course its my own new music and new lyric as well, but follows a certain pattern/recipe that some folks may know well.

As always with a political or topical song of mine, I welcome comments on the song itself, the production, performance, all of it, BUT please lets not start having long discussions about the underlying issues- this is a songwriting forum. Yes, I'd be interested in hearing 'does the song resonate with you, or maybe not' (and just about anything else about the song) but not 'well, you're wrong in verse two about x, its really y, and what about the fact that the vice-president did a or b". To the extent you feel that way, go write another song!

Recorded with vocal and acoustic guitar (Taylor), then overdubbed an electric guitar (red Telecaster) for a little extra something. Hope you enjoy! tho the subject is not exactly fun, I had fun and a great amount of catharsis about this current season writing and singing it, thats for sure!

Lyrics

I can’t understand or comprehend
Who made Trump president again?
Not me said the Republican leaders, who stood around while democracy teetered,
one impeachment is all it takes, they cared more about their tax breaks,
wanted a right-wing supreme court, who cares how many he deports,
we know he’s the devil that we installed, but you can’t blame us the Republican leaders at all

I can’t understand or comprehend
Who made Trump president again?
Not me said the democrats, don’t know what you’re looking at,
we passed the right rules and regs, but people care more ‘bout the price of eggs,
we warned of global warming effects, who knew they hate the word latin-x,
we knocked on doors, made phone calls, no you can’t blame us the Democrats at all

I can’t understand or comprehend
Who made Trump president again?
Not me said old Joe Biden, in the white house he was hidin’,
too old for a second term, then came the debate and he got burned,
handed it off to his running mate, but by then it was too late,
he hemmed and hawed, too long he stalled, no you can’t blame him at all

I can’t understand or comprehend
Who made Trump president again?
Not me said the American public, who don’t know how to keep this republic,
Some fell for an easy con, or yelled words like ‘get off my lawn’,
or sat out on the sidelines, on social media bitch and whine,
waiting for the second coming, while fascist drums kept a-drumming,
with nothing but a lack of knowledge, no idea ‘bout the electoral college,
or busy shopping at the mall, no you can’t blame the American public at all

I can’t understand or comprehend
Who made Trump president again?
Not me said NBC, who had meetings back in 2003,
said let’s get Don a reality show, it’ll be a ratings hit you know,
to make him look so wealthy & wise, tho it was all founded on lies,
they promoted that shiny beast, though all his business partners he fleeced,
the public’ll love it, we’ll have a ball, no you can’t blame NBC at all

I can’t understand or comprehend
Who made Trump president again?

Yes!! The great American protest songs are BACK!! Wonderful!

Great song @mikeskliar, happy to have found you on FAWM. Great to see Phil Ochs mentioned in the comments here!

I think honnestly, that he’s going to do so much wrong this time that he will prove that he’s not suited for president…

We in Europe we hold our hearts and have a lot of compassion wit heh etroubled weird situation yous are in….. At least you can write some songs about it wit humor. Music is therapy. Phew.

Ok the guitar flare is really cool in this. Very Beatles-esque.

Nouveau classic! Let's not leave protest music in the past, time to ramp it up again, for all kinds of reasons. Never out of vogue.

Normally I'd dodge, but in this you've done a great job of pointing multiple fingers. It's almost as if it was a magic wand, no-one responsible. I don't at all mind the channeling of the curly-haired bloke, I can't sing myself and his example was wonderful, and you've done it really well.!

This doesn't sound at all like Willy Wonka (....oh, not that Timothee Chalamet movie).

I like the subtle electric (slightly percussive) guitar in the background. There are a lot of lyrics in there but (just like a Dylan song) it doesn't feel over wordy.

Sad but true, but I think the biggest problem is people focussing on the individual (Trump) and not the reasons why so many people turned out to support him.

@eric
Definitely take the song in your own direction. I immediately started reading the lyrics along with the original tune by that certain very well known songwriter (I'm reading Chronicles right now). I always appreciate your songs, and i feel the same way. I can't understand,...

I love this one!!!!

The format of looking at a whole array of people in different positions, their effects, and how they don't want to take the blame, that doesn't get old, does it? It's both a way of digging into a multifaceted issue a bit and a handy bit of repetition for making a song.

It's the American public. It's us. We have failed catastrophically. I keep thinking of the photos from the 1960s, of thugs tormenting Ruby Bridges, the fire hoses, the attack dogs. Some folks weren't allowed to sit at a lunch counter, so it's not surprise that there was some discomfort with some folks sitting at the Resolute. All men are created equal? I guess it depends on the meaning of "All."

Solid tune, and some great lyrics. Nice to hear the Tele getting a workout!

You hit the nail on the head, and I love the way you performed this!
Yes, we are living in crazy times and I am glad that we can transform our frustration into creativity.
[avatar]
You've got the protest song down, dude! Second coming of Pete Seeger!
[avatar]
Great message. I cannot understand or comprehend either!! Speaking of understanding/comprehending, I really like the lil musical progression down on the lyric "I cannot understand or comprehend"
[avatar]
Absolutely great. I really like the inspired choice of words that make the rhyming so natural.
[avatar]
Good stuff - a fine upcycling of a great tradition!
[avatar]
You've said it and sung it perfectly. Nothing like a sixties protest for current times. Spot on!
[avatar]
Somewhere the ghost of ol' Woody is smiling. Say it once more for the people in the back! Nicely done Mike!
[avatar]
Sing it! Preach! Great form for this, and great lyrics. Your presentation is spot on as usual.
[avatar]
You've captured the vibe. The excuses and finger-pointing will only get worse as rights disappear and prices stay high, and you've summed it up eloquently before it happens.
[avatar]
Love it my friend and totally agree. I did one when he first was President and never expected to see him again.
[avatar]
Phil Ochs would applaud this, and so do I.
[avatar]
Yup really well put together! Delivers your message/ observations clearly. Very good start! I did have a flashback to a Billy Bragg comment when he said what will I do without Margaret thatcher,
[avatar]
Love that chord progression and the guitar playing, Mike! What a strong write for a first song, well done — and yeah, I can't understand either. 😞
[avatar]
I didn't make him president again. But, at the same time, I'm trying to be rational. Is that even possible? I'll settle for reasonable. Nice song!!
[avatar]
Well done - impressive kick off to this year's FAWM!
THat's a lot of words to string together without a clunker. Very nice.
[avatar]
Wow, this is fantastic. Cutting intelligent lyrics and the Dylan-esque delivery is perfect. Just sad that this song even needed to be written!
Oh, and the last line slays as the young folk would say ...
[avatar]
I concur. And LOVE your guitar sound! Delectable, awesome job dude!
[avatar]
This is a fantastic idea! I know and love the exact song you're referencing with this one, and I think you did it justice. We needed a 21st-century version.
[avatar]
Good song that reflects the despair at Trump getting in again and points the finger at just about everybody. Enjoyed the structure and the instrumentation - the electric guitar really gives some extra bite that wouldn't have been there if you'd gone acoustic only.
[avatar]
and who really killed davey moore?
[avatar]
On my first attempt , there was no recording for me to hear. The length was listed as ZERO - though the cassette did go around and around when I clicked play. But I returned to read the second comment and tried again and "Hey Presto" it worked. Nice one!

PS This sings well to "Who Killed Davey Moore" - The re-election of the orange nightmare is totally baffling to us Europeans. The guy got his chance and blew it - his presidency included so many disasters. But he's back and even more extremist than before. Sheesh! Quo vadis USA?
[avatar]
The lyric is well written, I especially like the rhyming. I think you nailed it. I, too, have used a template a time or two. Not sure mine turn out as well as yours.
Edited to add that I like your delivery, too. No response song for me, I think you nailed it.
