The Day After You

by @brisk

Liner Notes

This arose from messing around on the piano yesterday, though as often happens, none of the bits that I started with are kept except the verse part, which is largely unchanged. This has all been reconstructed on pianoroll, without any live input.

As ever, something like "the day after you" stuck after a few hours, which gave me an anchor for what the song was about, then the last few hours have been a tortuous plumbing of my memory banks for something... anything that will pad out the rest of the song lyrically in a modestly coherent way. Words are a bore, but I like trying.

Not sure how interesting this is musically; I have a kind of default mild jazzy pop setting that gets activated, and this might be a bit by the numbers.

Lyrics

Some loves
last forever
until they're
at an end
But even
we two misers
are out of
love to spend

Where will I find love again?
By turning a stone?

But the sky is blue, not a cloud in view
on the first day
And the grass is green as it's ever been
on the day
the day
the day after you

bad love
is a burden
Mad love
is a curse
Cold love
like a murder
But no love is
the worst

Why's no-one in love with me (yet)?
It's already known

That the sky is blue, just a cloud or two
on the last day
and the leaves are brown, here in Autumntown
on the day
the day
the day after you girl
it's true girl
yes it's you

I find the lyrics intriguing and thought provoking. The melody is is very pleasing. The title is super and the whole songs works wonderfully well.

Can’t beat a good waltz. Those opening lines are excellent, I don’t care what you say about the tortuous lyric writing process, you always end up with something intriguing. Speaking of which, The Day After You is a kick-ass title. Musically, love how it opens up into the chorus, and the harmonies are adding loads. Going back for a third listen… :)

Wow! One of my favorite songs so far from 50/90. LOVE that piano background and your vocals. Really terrific! ❤️

I like that gentle feeling of the chorusy section that life is good and life is how it’s meant to be with just a hint of melancholy. Then the mad love section feels like it’s morose, then back to the chorusy comfort. It makes me think of emotions being like clouds meandering across the cloudless sky. And maybe also that answering “how am I feeling” is a little like picking out shapes in the cloud. Glad you’re here and making music.
