Liner Notes

We're on holiday in the UK at the moment, so I haven`t had much opportunity to contribute. But a sleepless morning gifted me this one for a skirmish that had not long finished.

The inspiration for the final bridge was, of course, Robert Burns'
"Oh wha' gift the giftie gae us...."

Instrument: Epiphone Hummingbird Guitar (Incredible sustain, listen to that long fade I had to fade it out to avoid the end being too long!

Lyrics

(A) You think that you have it
But let me tell you, you don’t!
You (D) know you don’t have it
But you think one day you will
Well, you won’t!
You`re no (F#m) god’s gift to women
You won’t be a rock star
I could (E) tell you if you want
What you really are!
You (A) think that you have it
(E) But let me tell you, you (A) don’t!

(A) You posture and flaunt it
Like you’re the latest trend
What (D) people really think
I’d hate to tell you my friend
You (F#m) misinterpret
What brings on people’s smiles
No (E) one’s taken in by your
Incongruous wiles
You (A) think that you have it
(E) But let me tell you, you (A) don’t!

(Bm) Oh what a curse that we cannot see
What (A) others see in us so easily
If we (Bm) knew for sure what others think
(E) From the cold truth we would surely shrink
We (A) think that we have it
(E) But almost certainly we (A) don’t

First one of yours I've heard this year--fantastic job! Makes me think I need to do some "folkish" numbers myself--I'm kind of going through a "Wall of Sound" phase... Again, terrific work on this! ❤️

ha, very good. Reminds me a bit of 'You're So Vain' in theme if not melody and I too enjoy the switcheroo at the end!

Smooth and wise, a timely lesson in perspective.

my absolute favorite part of this is the gentle guitar accompaniment.

Well you certainly have it! Loved the song, great lyrics, vocals and guitar!

Well that's tellin' 'em! Compact lyric with plenty of repetition stays right on point. And, yeah, that's a good sounding guitar. Always liked the hummingbirds.

I love the change up at the end. This singer dishing out the judgement understands that someone is probably thinking the same of him (as should everyone). Cool concept and well performed.

This is absolutely wonderful and quasi Dylanesque in the best way possible. Very acute psychological observation and I love how you take the more accusatory you in the first part and change it to we at the end -as in some way we all think we are all that and sadly that’s not always true lol. Nice performance too and yes, that guitar has some nice sustain. Great work!!

@sbs
Ha! Love the lyrics - so who on holiday inspired this? lol! So true, really. Had a friend mistake me for somebody else and I thought, “That’s what you think of me?” We don’t really want to know what people are thinking…
