My friend Marion came over today and had this lyric. So in a matter of minutes we had it done.

Lyrics: Marion Doerflinger
Music: T.C. Elliott

Lyrics

Shootout on Battle Row
He was drunk, I was sober
I didn’t know why he was so angry
I never knew till it was over

I can’t stop the blood
Mama look at my hands
He’s my brother, Mama
I don’t understand

Shootout on Battle Row
He was drunk, I was sober
I didn’t know why he was so angry
I never knew till it was over

We’ll bury him in the valley
We’ll bury my brother today
He thought I glanced at his sweetheart
But I looked the other way

Shootout on Battle Row
He was drunk, I was sober
I didn’t know why he was so angry
I never knew till it was over

The story told by the literal words of the lyrics is short and simple, but thematically it evokes an incredibly broad, epic tale of jealousy and love, and is extremely effective. The various repetitions in the words add to the folksy feel, and the rootsy, on-the-porch performance is spot-on. There's a rawness and acceptance to the guitar and vocals which evoke the classics of outlaw country. And not to take away from this very fine accomplishment, which is wonderful exactly as-is, but I also think a Johnny Cash cover version, while of course sounding very different, would've also been a delight.

Love it! Great write, composition, and performance… Love the pacing, imagery, while the description is stark it ignites the imagination! Wonderful Collaboration, TC!

yup has a bit of the weight feel to me! Classic in that sad cowboy style. A very good lyric

love the chorus. has a (the) band feel to it. i turned off the adblock that was blocking so many of the embedded song links here and elsewhere, so i finally have the opportunity to hear your stuff. so far so good.

Well this is such a fine collaboration! It is a great lyric with strong images and a really well told story that captures a powerful story. The music is really perfect - I love the melody you put to it and as always your guitar and vocals are fabulous. Listening to this one again!
