Sometimes I love a sad story.

Lyrics

What happens when somebody sees you
When they show up with the fire that feeds you
When they fill up the spaces
Singing your praises
Trying to please you
And they fill every hour of the time
Saying how much they need you
What happens when somebody sees you

Every moment of a life
Spent being a lover, a mother, a wife
Giving yourself to everyone else
As a matter of course
And the trenches run so deep
You dig them even in your sleep
There’s a voice that is coming from somewhere
But you can’t find the source

All of the things that you love the most
The parts that you hold so very close
Are all disappearing, like you were a ghost
Guess that’s how it goes, but

What happens when somebody sees you?

It’s that heavenly moment when
You realize how hungry you have been
And you finally get to eat again
But the fruit is forbidden
So you take the troubling seeds
Along with all the secret needs
And you bury them all in the backyard
And keep them all hidden

But the yearning’s still burning inside
And it’s a damn hard thing to hide
Little seedlings reaching for the sky
And still you try

Beautiful lyrics. They're just metaphoric enough to trigger strong emotions. I also like all the different sections of the song and the chord structure (especially the unexpected E in the chorus). I've listened to this one many times. Thanks for sharing it.

Such a beautiful melody, lyric, and performance. I enjoyed this so much that I had to listen twice. Most of all, it made me think about some of the folks in my life who might feel that they are not “seen”. That’s probably my highest compliment- you made me think and reflect. Thanks for sharing.

Dang, that's a lovely melody. Nice work.

A sad song that really grabs hold and digs in to your heart. The "All the things you love the most" bridge had me in bits, because the older I get, the more this happens. Powerful, insightful writing, beautifully delivered.

It might be a sad song but it’s a very hopeful one, beautiful imagery of burying those seeds and them growing anyway. The lovely country bluesy grounding of your guitar playing while you let the melody loose is gorgeous.
