Thankful

Liner Notes

Hi there, dear reader/listener. Back for another FAWM. Still breaking in the new strings and the old fingers; I've gotten a little out of practice and this, although a #onemiconetake is actually the fourth take, I think.

I really am thankful. Thankful for FAWM, for Burr, Beto, and Eric's work behind the scenes. Thankful for you taking the time to listen. Most of all, thankful for God's love and blessings. A #firstfruits song of sorts.

Lyrics

Saturday morning
Minus 15
Still too early
For the sun to be seen

On the brown couch
Once again
If I had the money
I'd replace it, until then

I'm thankful for what I've got
By many standards, it's not a lot
But it's everything I need and more
And that's something to be thankful for

I'll head to the office
Later on
I've got good warm clothing
And a car that turns on

I had other plans
in younger days
But the blessed simplicity
Is why I give God praise

I'm thankful for all He gives
I have more than enough to live
And I have blessings by the score
I need to stop this thinking that I need more

I've got everything I really need
I've got more than that, and waste so much
And as I from the Good Book read
It help me understand my Saviour's touch
And His providing
His daily guiding

Saturday morning
Sipping tea
Thankful for all the things
God's given to me

Very nice evocative lyrics. I like the optimism in the words and the guitar playing is solid.

Lovely. A real nice one here, and I like how it's down to earth with your telling a story. And the mention of the couch, so perfect.

Ok time to rewind and back to the start. I really love how you've managed to weave togther the gratifude with such a flowing tune. I adore the end of chorus back to A major ( i think) , it has a real impact. this reminds me of a Graham Coxon acoustic classic .

The simple truth, always a great message.

Somehow I expect that brown couch will just be transferred to a first dorm or apartment and never really leave the family.

What a beautiful lyrical thought, celebrating contentment with what God has given you. Radically countercultural. Love that verse chord progression especially. (For some reason I feel like I remember the brown couch from a previous year’s lyric, is that possible at all? 🙂)

The couplet 'And I have blessings by the score / I need to stop this thinking that I need more' is sublime. And a pretty daring sentiment in a pop song - but one we desperately need.

Great first take. The chords really have that melancholic emotion and I like when they brighten up in the chorus. Your songs always remind me that I should be more thankful. It'S hard. Damn hard.

Resident in then-Calcutta in 1990, it was brought home how rich we are, and how blessed. And that was in the era when by Oz standards we were struggling to stay afloat. Learning thankfulness is difficult for us humans. Thank you for this #firstfruits. (I started my FAWM listening after church and church fellowship this morning. Alfven's "Prodigal Son" comes to mind)

I just had a cup of ginger chai tea, and heard a lovely song this Sunday morning. Thanks for that! Your message is one I, and the rest of the world, truly needs to hear. Great start, Alex.

Beautifully uplifting melody, of a nice slice of pie life. Wonderful first fruits song Alex!

Nice take metalfoot. Sweet, with an undertone of the bitter, which is different from bittersweet

You manage get some kind of thankful song each year and I look forward to them. You are right so much to be thankful for! We need reminding sometimes so thank you, and in such a comfortable form.

Oh man, this is great! Such thought provoking lyrics! Sounds like the fingers are working! Many blessings my friend!

Yay for the brown couch making its debut and perhaps finale in the same FAWM? It really is the simple things in life that bring the most pleasure and that I am most grateful for. Such as time spent with good friends ;)

Great start to the season. In a world of plenty, even we agnostics need to embrace this message.

Love the chord choices on this one. The bridge changes the pace without breaking flow and allows a moment of meditation, which really suits this one. I also really like where you set the vocal range for each different part, too. Everything really complements the lyric well on this one. Bravo!

Beauty. What a great first fruits reflection.

A lovely start for the month! Nicely done!

@cola
Love this! I appreciate how the lyrics of the verses gradually express more and more contentment as the song goes on, showing in action that perspective shift to viewing things with gratitude. Really lovely message, great firstfruits!

Genuine gratitude is kind of rare, and yet essential to our well-being. This is clearly heart-felt (and a good reminder for myself). I love the domestic touches: the brown couch, the tea, the warm clothing. Love the resolve to live simply and be thankful. Speaking of thanks: I'm grateful you're here, and keeping the FirstFruits tag alive (working on mine today).

Sincere and heartfelt. I love the simple images.

It's lovely to express such sweet gratitude as your first offering. Also, brown furniture (and carpeting) are perfect- most messes blend in with them! I saw a suggestion somewhere that if you have a pet, you should match your couch to their fur color. 😂 Anyway, nice one! btw i sent you an email about the postcard!

good to hear your voice again. you do a fine job of describing the intricacies of balancing consumer desire with material needs.

Nice start. Many things to be thankful for. IMO, brown couches hide stains better than other colours. So that makes them better.

@sbs
Lovely morning firstfruits. And, you know, you’d miss that brown couch if you ever replaced it. 😢
