It's hard to start a fire in the rain

Liner Notes

Late to the bandwagon, but here I am.

I read these lyrics when Stephen first posted them and thought either heavy, heavy shouty or picky acoustic (I also thought I'd probably not be able to do it justice, and thought I'd wait until he posted some more lyrics, but obviously that idea was scuppered šŸ˜€), but when I came to actually work out how to play what I heard in my head, it seemed to fit a slightly aggressive folk style, so that's what I went with. "Will of well wrought iron" is surprisingly hard to sing.

Lyrics

There's nothing but the nothingness before the silver spark
That summons the illusions to illuminate the dark
The blood is cold, the spirit low, the mind a weathered plain
And it's hard to start a fire in the rain, in the rain
It's hard to start a fire in the rain

No matter how we wend the way, the first step's always trying
So armed with willing sticks of wood and will of well-wrought iron
And versed so well in what it takes to rub without refrain
But it's hard to start a fire in the rain, in the rain
It's hard to start a fire in the rain

The trickle through your fingertips of thoughts that hold too long
The shush of records broken on the promise of a song
The flicker of a line that leaps and falters just as fast
The sputter of a first light that could never hope to last

So once again we set our soul into the sparks that fly
To burden them with bursts of life, to burn alive and die
To help us find the fortitude to fall and rise again
For it's hard to start a fire in the rain, in the rain
It's hard to start a fire in the rain

The harmonies, the violin, and especially the hush on the bridge, really got me. Some great production here, and I love your vocals!

You've hit on a very good balance - it's a little hard to describe what's going on here. It's part anthem, part protest, part prayer, part vent. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that it's all these things at once - there are three dozen pieces of evidence lying around us. Two particularly appreciable bits - the violin (atmospheric!) and the echo of the final bridge line (ditto!)

The doubled vocal is tasty. The strings are a marvelous touch. You're absolutely correct, that guitar is working perfectly. This is a damn good take in a series of awfully good takes. What a great arrangement.

Love the background strings perfect with the pace and the accent on the lyrics and doubled voices. Also great on the never hope to last. And will of well is hard, but it's the word shush that I can't wrap my head around. Great version of this song, really like the treatment.

i SUPER enjoyed the doubled vocals here. and the strings were a really nice surprise! i don't know if "slightly aggressive folk" is the same term i would have used, but whatever you call this style, it speaks to me!

Best version I've heard so far. This is one of those arrangements when I found myself thinking, "Damn, I wish I could do that."

Loving the Billy Bragg-iness of this version! Definitely suits the lyrics. Fab arrangement too, the way the harmonies join in the second verse, the little violin motifs, and the cool thing you do on ā€˜never hope to lastā€™ all keep you v much engaged as a listener. Totally with you on ā€˜Will of well-wrought ironā€™, but also WHAT a line!

Aggressive folk. Iā€™m good with that. I like punchy acoustic guitar. The harmonies are really great, especially the ā€œcould never hope to last part.ā€ And adding violin just seals the deal. Thatā€™s a keeper.

fantastic version. I like your chord choices. It makes it feel very triumphant and powerful. The fiddle really seals that feeling for me. Awesome work on this one

This is great! My kind of folk rock. I like when the harmonies and fiddle arrive in the second verse especially.
