Ms. Nancy and I are both fans of The Turnpike Troubadours and have ongoing aspirations to do something along the lines of their stuff. This probably misses by a mile, but it's a damn good lyric and I bet the TTs might not be insulted to learn this was intended as a respectful nod in their direction. Thanks, Nancy, for letting me take a crack at it.

Nancy: Hip, hip, hooray. Thank you, Jeff for leaning into this character and bringing him to life. A draft of this lyric had been sitting in a drawer for a long time. It felt good to dust it off and reunite it with it's rightful owner.

Lyrics

Girl, Thank Me
Lyrics - Nancy Cunningham
Music - Jeff Walker

If you're still eating steak, thank a farmer
If you're still reading romance, thank a tree
If you still know what you don't want in a man
Well, Girl, thank me

You liked going out, I took you dancing
You liked diamond rings, I took a knee
You liked to tell me what you don't want in a man
Well, Girl, thank me

See, maybe, you could thank me for a good time
Or at least you could thank me for a laugh
For all those times I let you wear my ball cap
Or for letting you think I ever liked your cat
You could maybe thank me for the way I really loved you
Or thank me now for leaving you alone
You might think I'd thank God if we ever got back together
But thank me, girl, you're on your own

If you're still eating steak, thank a farmer
If you're still reading romance, thank a tree
And whether you still know what you don't want in a man
Well, Girl, go ahead, thank me

The low vocal register reminds me of Alan Jackson, along with the swinging-along, bluesy guitars. The lyrics were a fun ride too, with that happy country nod to plays on words and humor - great collab!

Really digging the guitar solo, and the background piano was a nice touch. The line "if you're still reading romance, thank a tree" is such a silly line but very fun, sets up the rest of the song especially the hook. The hook itself is really great. Really fits in that genre of backwards turnaround country tunes, so I would say you hit the mark for TTT. Great job you two.

Speaking of Turnpike Troubadors, Mr. Isbell himself was here in the DC area last night--and I wasn't aware of it enough in time and already had baseball game tickets to the Nationals game with my girlfriend.

Sorry, Jeff--Jason Isbell is still my favorite country singer these days, but you're a close second. (Sorry, Chris Stapleton--you're still in the running...) ❤️

i have long wished for a collab from you two..and you do not disappoint. jeff's wonferful rendition of nancy's perfectly constructed lyric is at the top of my own personal charts. with a coupl of verse from the woman expressing the same sentiments, it wold be worthy of a george jones/tammy wynette duet.

Absolutely awesome!

Love the lyrics and excellently executed music - certainly a damning indictment when someone pretends to like your cat...the lowest of the low😠

Love the sound of your voice - it fits perfectly to the whole aural aesthetic. I'm a steak addict so that opening line got me hooked and I'm really glad I stuck around to enjoy this four course meal of hearty Americana. Expertly played - that lead guitar is just *chef kiss*!

Haha, this is awesome. I hope the narrator character is not the singer and okay because not liking cats but pretending to be their saviour is now officially weird, things being what they are.

Ha! Fabulous lyrics! The title caught my attention and I was wondering how this was going to play out.. Totally took me by surprise. And Jeff’s interpretation took me back to some fun, fun times to the 90s, which played a big part in my romance with my husband. Love it!
