Smoker's Blues
Liner Notes
So far, I've been the musical side of co-written songs. This post is all my own fault, nobody else to blame for how it turned out.
As a non-smoker, it seems funny to write a song about addiction to smoking. I've seen the results of the habit. My father began smoking when he was eight years old and a lifetime habit took his life. I'm now ten years older than he was when cancer got him.
On the musical side, I have a crappy guitar solo tucked into this piece. I'm a chord guy and not a soloist. Since we have far better guitarists here, if anyone wants to send me an improved solo, I would gladly replace my bit with a better version.
The song is downloadable for a real guitarist to work with. Any takers?
Lyrics
Well, I woke up this morning, much to my surprise
Lit my first cigarette to prove I'm still alive
Nicotine hasn't got me yet, but someday it will
I got this filthy habit, guaranteed to kill
I got the smoke (!) smokers blues
I got the smoke (!!) smoker's blues
And if I die of cancer
It won't make the news
When my break comes at work, I head out the door
Light up another 'cause I still need more
This habit runs my life, makes a damn fool of me
It makes me a prisoner and it won't set me free
I got the smoke (!) smokers blues
I got the smoke (!!) smoker's blues
And if I die of cancer
It won't make the news
If I die of old age, I'll be quite surprised
Since I skipped out on all that the doctor advised
I'm living day to day and glad to do it
'Cause a day above ground means another cigarette
I got the smoke (!) smokers blues
I got the smoke (!!) smoker's blues
And if I die of cancer
It won't make the news
Very catchy tune--and you are a Cougher Extraordinaire! ❤️
