Liner Notes

#space technology and #prog are a match made in heaven, aren't they? This one starts with the chorus, which isn't something I usually do but it seems to work out for Nile Rodgers...

Mr Musk may use the phrase, but he nicked it from someone else (no surprise there, then...) The first recorded use I've found was by NASA engineers in 1967 referring to a Saturn 503 S-IVB test at the Douglas facility in Sacramento that did not go as planned. By the 1970s the expression was in widespread use in the aviation industry.

Lyrics

Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly!
Science in your slang!
If you've had an RUD
Something's just gone bang!

Getting into space is hard
It's not "just up the road"
And anything you disregard
is likely to explode

I can see how this is going to go:
Something expensive deep inside is going to blow

Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly!
Science in your slang!
If you've had an RUD
Something's just gone bang!

A simple thing like "engine start"
can fast get out of hand
Your spacecraft shouldn't come apart
More quickly than you planned

Scrutinise your plans non-stop
Check every last detail
The payload riding on the top
will not want this to fail

The title reeled me in and the lyrics cracked me up. This is very fun, irresistibly danceable. Love that bridge.

There's an understated quality in the verses that strikes me as hilarious. Instruments are doing a good job of supporting the melody.

Love that deeply satisfying organ sound.
It's not just "up the road" lol.
Not sure why I'm smiling like an idiot at these lyrics.
I'm liking the full headphone mix here.
A great lesson for all of us; despite exhaustive planning, sometimes things just turn to poop.
Loved this whole thing.

The title made me think this was going to be a song about poo…so I clicked…thinking I’d get some tips and tricks…it’s spacey techy stuff…both are acceptable in my book. I love your proggy pieces like this. Your music beds are always made so well and voice cuts through mix right into my soul. I love the stabby staccato bits and the explosive sound at the end.

In space, nobody can hear you scream…when your expensive rocket thing goes boom.

I love the lyrics and overall concept here. My first thought was that this sounded a bit like some of Pete Townshend's more outre pieces, and my last thought was that this sounded a bit like Grace Under Pressure-era Rush, but in between this seemed like all you. Nice work.

What a prog fest! Love the sinister vocals. Really rockin'!

This just made me smile and I don't really know why, but I suppose I don't have to if the result is good :). There's something about the lyrics in particular, that makes it really entertaining for me, especially in contrast with the proggy sound. "Something's just gone bang". Indeed...

i think that happens to me sometimes these days. classic headfirst to my ear both lyrically and musically. so much in this to listen to.

Gives me John Shirley meets Warren Zevon vibes. Cool. Very cyberpunk. Great composition and instrumentation. Kudos.

Great title and hook on which to hang a song. Lots going on in my headphones, with a nice blend of keys, drums, guitar, bass and vocals. Reminds me of 70s proggers in the 80s, like Peter Gabriel. Cool spacey guitar solo!

Nice topic and thanks teacher! Like the suspenseful bridge a lot.

I'm trying to remember where this term came from--thinking it was a Space-X crash a year or so ago. Great work on the technology of the song--per usual. Very much enjoyed it!

Just love this, a big smile on my face. Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly is the BEST 'science' term that I have heard in recent times. Lyrics are spot on and now you've mentioned it, it appears that space and prog do go well together!

@sbs
Sometimes the chorus wants to go first. And, yeah, your prog seems to really be grooving on this space vibe after your retreat. Vocals offer up the payoff.
