Liner Notes

Lyrics: @crisp1
Music: @cheslain

@cheslain : Doug sent me these wonderful lyrics about a month ago to put music to and ever since they've been gradually forming into a song somewhere in the back of my mind. Yesterday I finally managed to sit down and compose and record the noises in my head. Lately I've been listening to some David Crosby and Joni Mitchell and that might be audible here.

Doug: @cheslain works a special magic when he sets my words to music. Wonderful guitar playing here and his always evocative vocals. I see my lyrics as depicting the fine line between reality and fantasy and he's found a great sound for the words. Thank you, Harri!

Lyrics

Verse One
So much emptiness to fill
Reality a bitter pill
Well, my friend, you know the drill
You’ve come to me before

Verse Two
Neon dancing on the wall
It somehow fades each time you call
I forget this room is small
When you walk through the door

[C]
And again the dark is sweeping in
Past the strip joints by the bay
And I’m glad you came to stay
If only for a little while
’Cos I light up in the middle of your smile
All kinds of fires could kindle
You never can tell
At the Emerald Sapphire Diamond Luxury Hotel

Verse Three
I’ve been called a dreamer, yes
It pulls me through the hours, I guess
I’m no piece for playing chess
But often feel controlled

Verse Four
Your touch takes me to new heights
And I might dream of love-filled nights
Until the real world comes and bites
A small part of my soul

[C]
And again the dark is sweeping in
Past the strip joints by the bay
And I’m glad you came to stay
If only for a little while
’Cos I light up in the middle of your smile
All kinds of fires could kindle
You never can tell
At the Emerald Sapphire Diamond Luxury Hotel
[B]

The rent boys and the users
And the thugs who are my neighbours
Haven’t tasted all the flavours
That a happy life supplies
Neither have I
Neither have I
But I want to try

[C]
And again the dark is sweeping in
Past the strip joints by the bay
And I’m glad you came to stay
If only for a little while
’Cos I’m happy in the middle of your smile
All kinds of fires could kindle
You never can tell
At the Emerald Sapphire Diamond Luxury Hotel

That phrase is so over the top. I found myself tumbling into thinking about the emptiness of overstated, exaggerated luxury. Glad you guys found each other.

Great lyrics, sensitive playing and vocals. Really tight write. There’s pretty much at least one line I love in every stanza. One favorite: “ ’Cos I light up in the middle of your smile.” Gorgeous stuff! What a solid collab.

its a top class lyric and the delivery is spot on. lovely guitar work and the back soundscape holds it well. very good collab

Wonderful lyrics presented beautfully. Excellent collab! I love the dreaminess of this. It's the kind of song that stays with you and makes you want more.

Really fine picking and singing. This is a super cool treatment of Doug's lyric. The melody is terrifically imaginative and the musical layers and flourishes are lovely. The originality of it combined with a vibe that feels familiar works marvelously. Fab collab you guys.

No weak spots. Great lyrics, great music, great music performance (this comes from a person who is always passive aggressive when it comes to guitar playing) and great production. So many talents at play here.

Beautiful guitar. Beautiful words. Beautiful emotion throughout, with a glorious ambiguity (at least to my ears) in those final lies of the chorus. Quite striking.

What a lush soundscape! Wonderful delivery of the brilliant lyrics. Gorgeous, you two.

the final lines of both the veres and chorus do have that kind of joni mitchel finality. a strong song, both in its lyrics and music, dougs voice is just as echanting as susan's music. I only have one question that will solve the mystery of the song. Is this one of those hotels that charge by the hour?

Absolute class from both of you! I don’t know if it’s just me, but I feel like you’re doing something really ingenious with the space effects going between the verses, which sound a lot drier and forward, to the choruses where it all gets a bit more dreamy. But it’s not an obvious thing, which is why it’s kinda genius if deliberate! Love the guitar, particularly the little descending thing into the chorus, and the delicate trills throughout. Can definitely hear those influences too. And then the words are glorious - what a title! It’s got that impressionistic ambiguity to it. Like it’s all a weird dream/flashback thing. Very JG Ballard somehow. Amazing work, well done chaps 👏👏
