Just had this vision of a guy having a heart attack in the rain trying to fix his flat. For some reason I'm picturing a 52-Ford pickup

Lyrics

Steak&Cheese and a Heart Attack

V I
Flat tire and a busted jack
Steak and cheese and a heart attack
Layin’ here in the mud
Guess I'll pray, good Lord above,

C
Wadin’ in the water, swimmin’ in her soul
Come for me Mary, honey take me home

V II
Stabbed me once and no more pain
Might as well enjoy the rain
How’d it come to end like this
On a short cut they always miss

Break/lead

V III
Hope you send some one I know
Some one I know to take me home
After 16 years Mary'd be great
She’ll take my hand, tell me I’m late

C
Wadin’ in the water, swimmin’ in her soul
Come for me Mary, honey take me home

Outro
Mary’d smile at me and I’d be
Swimmin’ in her soul
Oh, Swimmin’ in her soul
Swimmin’ in her soul
Mary’d smile at me and I’d be
Swimmin’ in her soul

Yes, I can hear the song, great lyric to make one think. I can almost hear something like The Lion Sleeps Tonight, with multiple voices.

Oooh, good one. I'm on it.

Yes, @gwynjones nailed it - it feels like a traditional folk spiritual song. What a way to go, but at least he had Mary ;) A cool idea for a song!

Good evocative lyrics...a bit like a traditional folk spiritual song...well done!

This is terrific! It's so clever, but also feels so *true* and lived in. The laconic, accepting resignedness throughout, and especially in verse 2 ("Might as well enjoy the rain") is absolutely perfect. This will make a glorious country or country-rock song; not my forte at all, but I hope someone accepts the challenge, because I would very much like to hear this (not that I'm not humming this in my head already)!

oh wow do i love this. just so beautiful and tbh, not the worst way to go. i completely hear someone like James Hand singing this with his thumpy guitar and a pedal steel backing

ooo, I love this. I think the lyric rhythm is very strong and can definitely picture a gritty rock kind of feel to it. Unfortunately it's not my wheelhouse so I can't help you much with this lyric but looking forward to what else you come up with.
