Liner Notes

I have to thank the #songsidekicksongcircle prompts from @unknownbecky for help writing this. I've been listening to The Wind in the Willows the last week and I wanted to write a folk-style song about the things I love in this book. Mr. Badger is my favourite character in the book, and I love the part of the story where Ratty and Mole get lost in the wild wood and find themselves on his doorstep.
I want to set this to music, but the world is too hot and my brain is melting, so it will have to wait.

Lyrics

Springtime sun burrows down into Mole End
And the wind sings in the willows
Shuffle out into the bright blowing wind
And the wind sings in the willows
Find your way down to the river’s clear flow
Where the wind sings in the willows

Heads down tails up River Rat hums
And the wind sings in the willows
Dog roses usher in June’s gentle sun
And the wind sings in the willows
Friends gathered round to sing soft and slow
While the wind sings in the willows

Sing with the willows
Sing with the wind
Sing with the river
Dearest of friends
Sing with the river
Sing with the wind
Sing, sing with the willows
Sing, sing with the willows

Toad’s on a tear down the wide open road
And the wind sings in the willows
Animals hasten to hide in their abodes
And the wind sings in the willows
Fall rains are coming the roads turn to mud
While the wind sings in the willows

Firewood crackles as day turns dark and cold
And the wind sings in the willows
Mole trudges out leaving prints in the snow
And the wind sings in the willows
Winter wind rattles the windows closed snug
While the wind sings in the willows

Sing with the willows
Sing with the wind
Sing with the river
Dearest of friends
Sing with the river
Sing with the wind
Sing, sing with the willows
Sing, sing with the willows

Tripped up and trembling, Mole’s ready to fail
And the wind sings in the willows
But Ratty is dauntless in snow’s thick cold veil
And the wind sings in the willows
Mr. Badger in gold letters, clear on the door
While the wind sings in the willows

Under the ground all is cozy indeed
And the wind sings in the willows
Food fire and friendship for all who have need
And the wind sings in the willows
The wide world is waiting when you want to explore
Where the wind sings in the willows

Sing with the willows
Sing with the wind
Sing with the river
Dearest of friends
Sing with the river
Sing with the wind
Sing, sing with the willows
Sing, sing with the willows

For me this captures that meditative place that reading the same book again and again at bedtime can open up. It makes me feel that delight of a favorite book lulling me or a child I’m reading to to sleep.

Short story meets folk song. Lovely result!

Beautiful folk song. Love how the repeated lines from the challenge fit perfectly with the song, and the line itself is golden too. Nice touch with the fade out at the end as it conveys the sense that the wind forever blows in the willows.

I love a good folk song, as I love nature. Such beautiful lyrics and your voice fits perfectly.

I *love* how you used the repeated line to evoke the old English folksong feel. That works so well! I loved the Wind in the Willows as a kid and you've brought the stories to life beautifully. Such a lovely song!

Such a beautiful melody, and the words are so lovely, too. I have a fondness for this story as well. Well done! ♥️

So lovely and pretty! And your voice has such a lovely purity and clarity to it. The lyrics and overall feel give me a little bit of a Vashti Bunyan vibe. Love this retelling of/dipping into the world of the Wind in the Willows. Each verse is a little treasure, but I especially love the "Toad's on a tear" verse.

You can do ever so much with a folk style. You've got some very sophisticated creativity Developing a story into this attention grabber. Very well done

This is absolutely lovely! Wonderful images and sentiment. Fabulous chorus. And as usual you also developed and delivered such a beautifully flowing melody.

Awww, this is sweet and a good tribute to the stories. I'm glad I got here after you set it to music.
