Shallow

Liner Notes

The verse melody of this came when I was out walking yesterday, and the chorus in the evening when I was putting it on my computer. Bit of a weak vocal on this I think, and the words are a bit superficial, but I quite like the choon. I also like having a ten bar verse; it was going to be eight but the end seemed to offer an opportunity to stretch it a bit.

Lyrics

Maybe I'm shallow
Barely come up to your knees
Maybe I'm shallow
I don't really disagree
But if I'm so shallow
Playfellow
Then get into the sea
This is what it's like with someone who's shallow
This is what it's like with someone like me

Maybe I'm yellow
But who isn't honestly
Maybe I'm yellow
But the whole world is cowardly
Maybe I'm shallow
and narrow
and useless virtually
This is what it's like to have to be shallow
This is what it's like to have to be me

Sometimes when we fight I see a mote in your eye
Mote in your eye so long
(a beam in mine)
Sometimes when we fight I get a mote in my eye
Mote in my eye so long

Maybe I'm hollow
Isn't everyone these days?
Maybe we're hollow
in a hundred thousand ways
Maybe we're hollow,
and yellow
and shallow all the same
This is what it's like when people are shallow
This is what it's like when shallowness stains

Sometimes when we fight I see a mote in your eye
Mote in your eye so long
(a beam in mine)
Sometimes when we fight I get a mote in my eye
Mote in my eyes
Mote in my eyes
Ooh

I like that turn from shallow being an insult applied to a person, but something that makes a sea inviting. Then the sounds and meaning of the other ullow words, And how “hello” lingers in the background of these. Also how “a mote” has a shadow existence as “emote” Feels like an exercise in self-acceptance instead of rushing to reject characteristics because someone else insults them.

Lovely song, and I like the lyrics a lot. Well-done all around!

Yes, lovely vocals. Reminds me of the Everly Brothers. Really nice melody, production, etc.

Wow! I'm glad I scrolled back for this one. Just lovely--ALL the ingredients with wonderful lyrics, great arrangement and a terrific vocal. One of the best songs I've heard here this summer... ❤️

There's so many great melodies here, it's slightly intimidating. I think special mention for that first little ascending bit of the chorus, that's gorgeous. Feels like a typical Brisk narrator, very arch, self-aware, slightly opaque, self-deprecating. I really love that 'get into the sea' line. And the word 'mote' is surprisingly satisfying. I can see why you repeat it about nine hundred times 😂.

this is lovely. the melody is gorgeous and your quiet vocals float so lovingly across the dellicate music. in the firsr verse, i elt it was the sea inviting a person afraid of water to come in wading. then in a later verse, i thought of the hollow men, and for me this is the true essence of the song. the sea metaphor, if there was even meant to be one, was a ruse.
