Lyrics

They told us freedom isn’t free
Scared us into war
Destroying families
And all the good which we stand for

They said we can’t have it all
Without some sacrifice
Little by little
We bought into their lies

Now we’re standing on the edge
Can we get back somehow?
They’ve toxified our heads
Smothered us with doubt
We’re standing on the other side
Of their picket fence
Sold us American Dreams
All it cost was our independence

We’ve got smart phones and smart cars
And too much food to eat
So Why do we still see
People starving on the streets

We look away we roll our eyes
If we’re so damn civilized
No one would be forgotten
Nobody left behind

Now we’re standing on the edge
Can we get back somehow?
They’ve toxified our heads
Smothered us with doubt
We’re standing on the other side
Of their picket fence
Sold us American Dreams
All it cost was our independence

So if you must go
Don't go quietly into the night
It’s never too late
Now’s the perfect time
Raise up your voice and
Do what’s right

Cuz we’re standing on the edge
Can we get back somehow?
They’ve toxified our heads
Smothered us with doubt
We’re standing on the other side
Of their picket fence
Sold us American Dreams
All it cost was our independence
Sold us American Dreams
All it cost was our independence

Welcome! I like this song and the low-key delivery of your message. "We're standing on the other side/Of their picket fence." Great lines.

This is fantastic! A timely and much needed message. The bridge is particularly powerful, a call to action.

just back to listen to the demo--- really effective! great work- the music and lyric fit really well, and a great performance. Lots of great lines, and lots of great points made in the incisive and thoughtful lyric. 'toxified' is an excellent word choice! as someone who writes alot of political stuff, this is appreciated

Beautiful song, I love this so much! Great voice over the sparse chords, and fantastic lyrics!

great start! an apt song i love the mix of American styles, like a kind of do-wop feel with a folky feel protest song. Beautifully performed as ever, i love your voice. love the picket fence line/image. Nice one Blake

Solid lyrics covering a lot of political ground. Wish I could access the demo, but the write looks solid.

really good lyric - in the classic style of protest/warning song! the pace of this is spot on! i really like this one - got me wanting to stamp and shout! kudos

Great lyric, thought-provoking, and well done. I can’t access the music either, but hopefully that’ll get fixed.

Hmmmm…link to your song isn’t working for me but the lyrics are stark and the thoughts are organized into interesting patterns. Since I was a young man…I’ve never understood the US being “the freedom place” but also HAVING “the patriot act”

Folks get lost in the theater of it all…honestly I think that’s more the point than an unfortunate side effect. Maybe it’s true, freedoms just another word for nothing left to lose.
