Too-Tight Embrace

by @francesc

Skirmish: Independence (or the lack... (@robinleaf)

Liner Notes

The theme is "Independence (or the lack thereof)"
And I thought, hmm, what if the character in the song used to have a lack of independence?

The bridge needs work, I know... But since it's a skirmish, I know that I should leave it for now and not overthink it, and come back to it in the future!
#skirmish

Lyrics

Verse 1:
I can go out and eat whatever I want
or stay out late, and drink till morning comes
I don’t have to update you
or worry I upset you
ever since we’ve cut ties
I’ve lived this freer life

I can hang out with whomever I want
or loiter alone at a pricey coffee shop
I won’t have to confront you
no longer am I tied to
your ideal behavior
I know I’m no failure

Chorus:
but I still miss you
like a too-tight embrace
I still miss you
like a too-tight embrace
I know it’s wrong
but I still miss you
I still miss you
and your painful embrace

Verse 2:
I can write songs and do whatever I want
without the thought of you dictating it worth it or not
I won’t have to think of you
or what you want me to do
I don’t need to impress you
my mind needs to repress you

Chorus:
but I still miss you
like a too-tight embrace
but I still miss you
like a too-tight embrace
I know it’s wrong
but I still miss you
I still miss you
and your painful embrace

Bridge
I know I’m free now
and there’s no need to grieve how
I lost something I loved
but was no good for me at all
I’m strong, independent
yes, I’m glad that I’ve left it all
despite that, some parts of you
have left marks on my heart

Chorus:
but I still miss you
like a too-tight embrace
but I still miss you
like a too-tight embrace
I know it’s wrong
but I still miss you
I still miss you
but I’m pulling away,
yes, I’m pulling away

Really liked the line “ I still miss you
and your painful embrace”. Really sums up the song, how can something so unpleasant be so missed.

It's nice to hear a different take on the prompt. So many of us went for political, and this works just as well. Nice write!

Another great take on a skirmish. I admire the people who can come up this fast with something for a skirmish

What a great melodic line and chord progression; the chords feel wistful and the lyrics are really nicely done. "I still miss you like a too-tight embrace" is a great line!

Your message is wonderfully clear. Great contrast in the defiance of the verses and the lament of the chorus and bridge. I think it's amazing that this is a skirmish! Nice work!

@gm7
Very airy synth. Great to see you singing and the DAW at the same time... cool. Great seeing you the other night ( night for us but not you)on Zoom

Your chorus made me think of a relationship of my own. You painted a clear picture I can identify with.

Great line - too tight embrace! Really nicely done! Very good skirmish!

That beat and synth duo is so dreamy! I feel like I'm sitting in a cafe while it's raining. Absolutely wonderful chorus.

@cts
Very nice, indeed! That chorus has such an endearing feel about it; that whole idea of holding on or letting go. It reminds me of David Ruffin's song, Walk Away From Love. Gives me chills as did your song. Fantastic work!

Oh, this is such a wonderful piece of music! And I think everyone here knows this topic! You packaged it so beautifully! Really really good!

This is really lovely and so relatable! I love the image of missing a too-tight embrace. Thanks so much for attending my skirmish!

I love the "behavior/failure" rhyme. Expressive storytelling that puts your feelings right out front. Good skirmish.

Excellent take on the skirmish. This is a solid piece of writing and a good foundation for developing further.

Nice! It's a good metaphor, but you might want to find an additional metaphor for the chorus. In the fourth line, "I miss you like" something else that's uncomfortable, so that the "too-tight embrace" doesn't get over-worked.

I like the melody!

That is excellent! With a bit a production work this could easily pass for professional work. You have great potential.

this has a sense of sadness underlying its feirce declaration of independence..and the song is so good and well performed that both emotional aspects of the break up come across strongly,

Well done for even trying a bridge in a skirmish. Great take on the prompt.
