Liner Notes

ZeCoop: Oh, the wonderful final week of FAWM, when collaborations come in for songs that you barely remember writing. I actually *do* remember writing this one, because I was really excited about it, way back on Feb 2. The chime-y guitar style is one of my favorites and reminded me of a couple songs that Owl and I did a few years ago. Luckily, she found some time to write this one with me as well and I am blown away again with her amazing lyrics. Surprising to me was how much emotion came out in her vocals!! I love hearing this new (to me) side of Owl. I am so honored to have such amazing collaborators - thank you so much for making this song so much more than it was! 💙

owl: The first draft of the lyrics was written with just the guitar track @zecoop originally sent me, wonderful surprise hearing how amazingly he'd filled out the arrangement later!

My cat got so upset when I was recording the loud parts of this that I had to take a break and give her some treats to calm her down. She is not a fan of singing in general and the other day, when she was sitting on my lap, she started biting my stomach because my *husband* was singing, which seems pretty unfair.

Written for the #brewersdip challenge that @richardmasters was running on the forum... I got the following prompt:

Green-eyed monster, The.
Shakespeare called jealousy : —
O! beware, my lord, of jealousy;
It is the green-ey'd monster which doth mock
The meat it feeds on. Othello, iii, 3.

A greenish complexion was formerly held to be indicative of jealousy; and as cats, lions, tigers, and all the green-eyed tribe "mock the meat they feed on," so jealousy mocks its victim by loving and loathing it at the same time.

Lyrics

I try to be cool, I try to be chill
I know that these feelings are a poison pill
But when I find old photos of her
There are moments sometimes when it just hurts

Like when your grandma asks you if I'm
That nice girl Kristin, the one with the green eyes
And you tell her nana, you've gotten mixed up,
and she says, how funny, I always thought she'd be the one

I like to pretend you were frozen in time
Waiting suspended until I arrived
Floating in gel, coated in ice
The handsome smuggler in a block of carbonite

Crazy to think that you lived and you breathed
Walking around pretending to be
Perfectly happy, a heartbreaker
Making mistakes in your life just like me

Jealousy gnawing the weakness it seized upon
The green-eyed monster mocking the meat that it feeds upon

Maybe I'm pretty
Maybe she's prettier
I can never be her

Maybe I'm cool
Maybe she's cooler
I can never be her

Maybe I'm smart
Maybe she's smarter
I can never be her

Maybe I'm trapped
Maybe she's free
I can never be

Do you love me?
Do, do you love me?
Do you love me?
Do, do you love me more more more than her

Jealousy gnawing the weakness it seized upon
The green-eyed monster mocking the meat that it feeds upon
Jealousy gnawing the weakness it seized upon
The green-eyed monster mocking the meat that it feeds upon

Oooh holy frick YES this is so good y'all! I agree with so many of the previous comments about the winks here and there to 80s/90s college rock with some Sleater-Kinney (though I was getting bit more Wild Flag until the end when more of the Corin voice came out.) Hearing @owl get so big and loud at the end is such a treat! And this music and the arrangement from @zecoop is awesome -- especially love the bit with the arpeggio guitar and that bass coming in before the "Do you love me?" section. And @owl is pretty much always a brilliant lyricist, but I'm particularly blown away by these lyrics, as it's a feeling I (unfortunatelyyyyyyy) relate to/have related to a lot, and you've articulated it so much better lyrically here than I feel like I've ever managed to. This is so freakin' good, y'all!

Ohhh there's some most excellent Peter Buck-esque guitars in here. So delightfully jangley! My mind is jumping from alternative 90s, to Fleetwood Mac, to modern day indie-pop (Alvvay perhaps?).. so many influences on its sleeve, but only enough so it creates something quite original. So many great vocal moments, the spoken 'do you love me?' into the Queen-esque 'MORE THAN HER!' harmony; I am just picturing as an incredible live moment. Top class, both of you.

Hell yeah! I love the sleater kinney meets the sundays vibes here. So kinetic and bouncy while still being tough. The vocal is so fun.

What a great track! I love those vocals, and the whole vibe makes me think of 80s into 90s pop. Really enjoyable listen 💚

This is stellar guys! Truly a gem of college-rock power pop. Great playing and outstanding vocals!

Speaking of jealousy, these jangly, shining guitars and sassy vocals would make the Primitives jealous I'm sure! The catchy verse are to die for, and I love how it goes a bit Sleater-Kinney in the bridge and then breaks down back into the verse guitars before the finale. I've been listening to Owl for a good long while now and I'm not sure I've ever heard you belt it like this! Channeling your inner @loveonamixtape. Last year, your "Deborah" track was one of my favourite (top 3 of FAWM 2024 at least) and I think this tops that, or sits alongside it beautifully. ZecOwlp album?

Goddamn this has such a great energy to it. Kinda sounds like an upbeat Sonic Youth track, or maybe Sleater Kinney. The little yep! after ‘just like me’ is so infectious. The chimey guitars, the anxiety in the cymbal smashes—perfect. And it comes to a crescendo in such a brilliant way as @owl cranks the volume. Never heard you sing like this but you’re a duck to water. This is more cruelly infectious than the norovirus that devastated my insides last week. I am so utterly blown away by this, that I don’t even have the emotional bandwidth to discuss your brilliant lyrics.

That groove is catchy and foot tapping! I’m loving these lyrics too.. the tones on instruments all fit so well, really great work!

Wow, I don’t even know what to say! This is an instant classic and should go on a record somewhere, some time. Great collaboration from the both of you!

This is too good! The bed of underlying music is just awesome. Four minutes flew but in a flash. That picked arpeggio on the guitar is killer. Great tone to it. The drums, bass, rhythm guitar just fill out the rest so well. The breaks and dynamic changes too...especially the bass coming in at 2:40...Fantastic. As far as lyrics and vocals, I have to agree with @rubberbandage and her comments about @owl, she shines in every style. 10 out of 10 from me...

the lyrics just pour out through the music. you've got you know what in that guitar style again. it's almost eerie to me @zecoop. love it. well played.

Luscious and brooding! For myself I am insanely jealous of how, no matter what, @owl’s gorgeous voice and harmonies punch through the music and shine in every style 🤩
[avatar]
I love a good 1-2 punch in the face as an opening to a song. Definitely a Pretenders vibe going on here! The guitars sound tight and the whole band sound fits together well. Vox amps?

My only suggestion would be to play with a tempo where the words are easier to sing - it’s on the edge of sounding like a lot of work to sing.

Ooh ooh ooh I like this a lot! This is driving, chimey, melodic perfection. I am floored by the versatility that @owl brings to this track. What a vocal performance! Perfectly conveys the inconstant surges of jealous emotions.

The live backing sounds pristine - hats off to @zecoop for packing and inordinate amount of musical talent into one body.
