No Present Like the Time

Liner Notes

Another wonderful title and lyric by @greengrassgirl addressing #generational #fatherhood and #family
Such a pleasure to collaborate with Patty again on this one...

Special thanks to Patty and thanks to you for listening...

Patty says:
Gwyn has such a way with music of all styles. I was so pleased when he agreed to add music and vocals to this lyric. I love how he presented this story of appreciation for family and the dedication this father had to his son…and how the son is trying to do the same for his own boys. Thank you, Gwyn!

Lyrics

Lyrics: © Patty Lakamp

Chocolate cake and candles, my boys all made the trip
To be with me when I turned sixty-five
My own Dad called to say hello, we passed the phone around
He tends to stay at home since Momma died

(He said)
Meant to send a present, son, time just got away
I’d love to see your boys and how they’ve grown
It makes me sad I can’t be there to help you celebrate
So, I guess we’ll have to settle for the phone

Dad, for years you gave me the best gift ever
All those times you and I spent together

Dad, there’s no present like the time
When it comes to being a father, you did it right
Fishing for cutthroat by the beaver dam
That beach near Grampa’s cabin, digging clams
The train layout you helped me design
Dad, there’s no present like the time

Heard his voice get teary, he struggled with his words
He said, It’s true, son, I remember, just like you
But don’t think any part of that was just a one-way street
All those memories were gifts you gave me, too

Both of us were silent, remembering the past
I thought of sons and fathers down the line
The time he spent with me and what a priceless gift it was
And it showed me how to raise these boys of mine

Dad, for years you gave me the best gift ever
All those times you and I spent together

Dad, there’s no present like the time
When it comes to being a father, you did it right
Fishing for cutthroat by the beaver dam
That beach near Grampa’s cabin, digging clams
The train layout you helped me design
Dad, there’s no present like the time

Things you can get with a trip to the mall
Can’t compare to the best gift of all

Dad, there’s no present like the time
When it comes to being a father, you did it right
Fishing for cutthroat by the beaver dam
That beach near Grampa’s cabin, digging clams
The train layout you helped me design
Dad, there’s no present like the time

Dad, there’s no present like the time

This is very touching, choked me up a bit. The walk down memory lane sure conjured up memories of my own. The music and vocals sound tender and sincere. Wonderful collab!

I love the harmonies on the chorus - and the great country vibe to the vocal delivery. Also like the major-chord lift as the chorus resolves. Recently lost my dad and the lyrics really resonate -- thanks for a great song!

This is wonderful-- the lyric has that great country "switch-meaning phrase thing" (yeah, there's a name for it but I dont know it either) and is in the tradition of songs like Harry Chapin's 'cats in the cradle'. Music and performance is perfect for this, sympathetic, warm and inviting. Great job all around by everyone on this!

Hmmm...I just commented on another @greengrassgirl collaboration this morning and joked--as I believe I have joked with Gwyn before--that it's not fair to do waltzes, because they are ALWAYS so good. Apparently @greengrassgirl inspires them. Hmmm... Anyway--great song, and a great collaboration. CHEATERS!!!! 😉❤️

Wonderful title right off the bat! Love that spoonerism (if you could call it that im sure theres a more accurate term). Americana folky bluegrass and mandolin is killer, I love the production on this, it really sings nostalgia and the Waltz time signature invites images of flowing dance. The harmonica is gorgeous and the content of these lyrics is so incredible, it's so dense with memory and love it's almost hard to breakdown to comment on as it's such a full and complete picture, every lyric compliments the next! Incredible job both of you!

Lovely country waltz time tune! What a seriously good title! I like these story style songs that give you a snapshot into an idyllic life. Gwyn’s voice captures the nostalgia well while Patty’s lyrics give us a welcome dose of sentiment that tugs at the heart. Winning combo guys.

What a clever title, and really engaging story telling in the lyrics. Great backing track - nice touches of harmonica, and I like all the strings - the mandolin is so nice to hear. Smooth, soothing and very compelling musically. Oh my goodness that chorus is really something - love those backing vocals with your gorgeous smooth vocals - and the rise is so lovely, and such an uplifting melody. This is such a lovely collab! Well done.
