06. You Can't Take A Picture Of This (It's Already Gone)

Liner Notes

#sixfeetunder #indierock #nostalgia

Inspired by a really powerful and haunting line from the final episode of HBO's Six Feet Under, this track is a more up-tempo piece to balance out some of the bummer-y stuff this current project has turned into. I mean...the lyrics aren't...any happier...but at least it's faster!

I think it became a lot of things, despite not really being that long or deep of a track, but in my mind this song is about the fleeting nature of not only life, but creativity as well.

I think, subconsciously as I wrote it, the first half is a self-critique about how hard it is to put yourself out there, to open yourself up, and to have people be uninterested because they have their own hardships. Life is short, so suck it up. But I don't follow by that mantra. Music is cheaper than therapy, and I love music that is from a persons core, warts and all. If you don't put yourself out there, you may miss the moments along the way.

Ultimately it's born from the Six Feet Under line, and a concept that intrigues, worries, saddens, and frightens me: that somewhere along the way you can get so lost in the past that you miss the memories being made in the present. I try to be grateful and conscious of this nowadays: I know that the apartment I'm in and the roads I drive will one day be gone, and everything I do will be yearned for, so I see it in the moment.

I dunno, this was one of those late-night lyric writing sessions where I'm trying to decipher the meaning of my own gd song, lol. Interpretations are valid, but like, I wanna know what this crap I write is ABOUT sometimes, right?

Anyways, thanks for reading this set of ramblings, if you did. Much appreciated!

Lyrics

Verse 1:
They say we can't all
Be defined by our sorrows.
A good artist borrows,
But a bad one will bleed.

When the truth is hard to swallow,
I'm so sorry to say,
Kill your darlings,
Or bury the lede.

We're gonna have to
Suffer in silence.
We gotta disappear
Deep into the pockets of grooves.

Turn every minor chord to major,
So every misanthropic stranger
Won't be selfish
And bring down the mood.

Chorus:
We'll just have to
Fend for ourselves.
We can't wait
On somebody else

To remind us of all the moments
That have never been caught.
You can't take a picture of this,
It's already gone.

Verse 2:
We're all living in
Lucid memories,
With wounds that
Fade but somehow never can heal.

They were there,
And now they're gone,
And we don't where we went wrong
When the impressions are all we can feel.

If you don't care,
I don't know what to tell you,
But we're marching
Closer every moment we breathe

To the final time we see in focus,
And we'll never even notice
When we don't.
Yeah, it's hard to believe.

We'll just have to
Fend for ourselves.
We can't wait
On somebody else

To remind us of all the moments
That have never been caught.
You can't take a picture of this,
It's already gone.

You can't take a picture of this.
It's already gone.

This is so freaking beautiful! I've not seen that show, but you paint such an interesting perspective of the phrase. I totally get what you mean about trying to interpret your own lyrics lol sometimes it feels like your brain is working a few years ahead! There's a lot here to interpret too, and all beautifully written in your sad style (love your sad style!!!). I love how the song has an ebb and flow like waves of memory swelling then falling away, especially there at the end. And that piano is just jaw dropping gorgeous. Really awesome work!

another brilliant song. the piano intro had me think you'd stay lo-fi throughout, but you made things blossom beautifully. the warm central piano lines are lush, and - once again - your vocal harmonies are great. your production skills are improving too!! keep going

The piano that leads throughout is wonderful. And as always your production is excellent. Another amazing song.

the muffled, distorted piano intro is haunting... really lovely—great flow/delivery of the lyrics & the moment when the chorus punches in is super effective. the processing on the vocals at the very end wrap a beautiful bow on it... or maybe rather leave it open ended. super nice(:

Absolutely gorgeous straight out of the gate from the intro melody. Love the production/overall sound.
Some great lines, and the rhythms of the lyrics are very effective.
Towards the end there's some effect on the backing vocals that distorts the pitch, leading to some weird effect, which could be seen as eerily effective or maybe slightly off.
Radio-perfect vocal performance.
This is a smash hit to me.
