Liner Notes

I wrote this one late last night and planned to add more parts etc to the arrangement but, on listening back this morning, I quite like the sparseness of it as it is.

It's a bit unusual for me to be posting a confessional guy-with-guitar song these days, so I thought I'd take it back to the early 2010s for this one!

#indiefolk #guywithguitar

Lyrics

you thought you had it sussed
but you didn't
you thought you had it sussed
oh oh oh but you didn't
i sometimes see you around
but common ground don't seem so common now

hear you're running off your mouth
to everybody
i hope that you feel proud
of never saying sorry
your studied nonchalance
pretending i'm the one that's in the wrong

believe me when i say
i want nothing but the worst for you

put another record on
this one is boring
cos we've heard it all before
this unanimous verdict
now longevity
the only thing left between you and me

This is just beautiful. I like the chords you’ve chosen on guitar, dissonant in all the perfect ways. Such a soulful vocal performance too. Great listen 💚

You nail it with this emotional, vulnerable performance. This gets under the skin. This moves the mind as all great songs do.

Yeah a bit raw I guess but all the better for it. Love the lyrics

I love your vocal -- emotive, haunting, and clear. I love the sparse and dissonant guitar. And those last two lines . . . ohhhhh. You're killing me softly!

Finally getting some listens in , and I have to say , this truly hits my musical senses . I love the way the vocal is projected over the spareness of the instrumentation , it totally adds to the atmosphere and that melodic curve for each opening line is a winner . Really gorgeous listen 🙏

I’m a fan of the solo guitar and vocal. I really liked your line, “your studied nonchalance.” That’s a great juxtaposition that is perfectly clear. Great job!

Lovely stuff, this really suits a stripped-back arrangement and the guitar / vox sound great. Sharp lyrics benefit from the space to be heard, too! @judypie is not wrong that this has a bit of that REM ballad vibe but with more of an edge than Everybody Hurts. More like "You, Specifically, Suck"

Now I wonder who this could be about. I agree that the "common ground" line is a great line, both the lyric and the delivery. The title reminds me of Mozzer talking about Mike Joyce after their court case. It's nice to hear a simple folk tune from you. It's been a while and you're good at it.

It’s giving me ✨ Michael Stipe ✨ and I like it! Love the sparseness, I feel like it has everything it needs. That gentle guitar and gorgeous voice ❤️

Ohh! You had me at "but common ground don't seem so common now." I agree that the sparseness of presentation works well for this song. I also like the bleakness of "now longevity/ the only thing left between you and me."

Sparse was a great choice for this. Allows you those super open chords to really shine and for us to focus on your superbly delivered vocal performance. The lyrics convey a stark moment, an empty feeling. The songs matches them perfectly.

Nice open tuning chords, and your soothing vocals over the top are stella. I’m getting a bit of a Thom Yorke vibe from the Melodie’s and lyrics, one of my faves!

You have such an emotive voice. I felt a lot of languishing in these verses. My subjective take. The steady pacing of the guitar and your voice soaring through with all its emotional delivery within the lyrics took me me on a journey through big feelings, a long walk with an honest narrator. Thank you!

@eric
Your voice is strong against the drone of the guitar. It's mixed really beautifully. Love the subtle distant note at 1:45.

MMM, love a good DADGAD <3. I'm really liking this. You really use your voice and sustain it.

The stripped back setting works really well for your voice - it sounds really strong and those long, held notes sound great. Lyrics are excellent - the common sense/not so common lines are particularly good.

I really enjoyed this stripped own version of you. Your vocals and lyrics are powerful and stand strong on their own.
