Fish and Chips

by @danielkelly

Liner Notes

My first song for FAWM 2025, after feeling like not doing it this year. Mostly because I write topical songs, and the state of the USA is just beyond grim.

Having come back from a few days at the beach, I figured writing songs can help solidify the good memories that we reach for in troubling times.

Lyrics

G D
Fish and chips, by the sea,
Em C
A piece for you, and a piece for me,
G Bm
We’ll bath in the serenity,
C D
Of the gentle ocean waves.

Forget the world, for just a while,
It feels so good to see you smile
G D
We’ll leave our problems in a pile,
C D G
Far far away from here.

Fish and chips, by the sea,
A glass of wine or maybe three,
The sea birds have a life that’s free,
Wish we could do the same,

But just like waves, the problems come,
We’ll plant our feet and face each one,
And when the busy day is done,
Together we’ll sit down,

For fish and chips down by the sea,
Collecting a happy memory,
What’er tomorrows fate may be,
Again we’ll play the game,

For rocks are worn by shifting tide,
But life still thrives on every side,
With sail furled, we’ll turn and glide,
To futures foreign shore.

Ah, I feel so calm and peaceful now. Maybe I should avoid the news for the rest of the day, and go buy some fish and chips. Been far too long since I have had good ones, though even the best wouldn’t work as an outdoor snack in a Canadian winter.

This is so relaxing. I love the image of just enjoying a meal by the ocean, reminding ourselves that there is still beauty here and experiences to enjoy, despite the world being a mess. This has a very classic Celtic folk sound to it. Good stuff.

Hello lovely #FAWM family! @laurenoxford @philkmills @dr_griff @gmcgath @pumpkinhead @edwinb @fb2studios thankyou for listening to my first song and for the kind words. You reminded me of why this activity is so rewarding for everyone involved, and especially needed in 2025 and beyond.

everything about you is a balm—your voice, your playing, your lyrics. i feel healed a little bit after listening to this. 🥹 there's something so plaintive about the progression; it's full of a longing that i think all of us stuck here in the states feel deeply. a longing to worry about something as simple as whether or not a seagull will try to sneak a chip.

thank you for this <3

(also ugh fish and chips sounds SO good right now, dammit. now i'm hungry!)

Very pretty music. I think you just lowered my high blood pressure by a few points. 😀

With the state of the world right now, we all need a song like this one. The reminder that we can set it down for a while and just exist with each other is so, so important. And as usual, your vocals and your guitar work pull at my heart in all the right ways. Beautiful work, sir.

The worse things are, the more we need to remember the simple things that add value to life. And try not to remember how much fat there is in fish and chips.

This is what FAWM and music is for. Forget about the grim and just have some fish and chips by the sea. This one made the world a better place to be. Thanks 🙏

Mmm fish and chips. This is a joy, both the song and the thought of fish and chips by the sea. Usually with Irn Bru around here but I like your idea too.
