Liner Notes

#skirmish This was a skirmish where you have an hour to write and record something to a prompt-- the prompt here was 'no luck at all' and I came up with this #country thing quick. Quick guitar and vocal, with a Johnny Cash-styled bass part on guitar for a quick overdub

Lyrics

When I win my first Grammy
I will of course thank Mommy
But I won’t thank Jesus, why? because I am a Jew
When I win my first Tony
I will ride up in a pony
But I kind of doubt any of this will come true

I’ve got the luck of the luckless
The luck of the luckless
My luck took a walk, and walked into a wall
The luck of the luckless
No way that it could suck less
The luck of the luckless, which is no luck at all

If they pick numbers for the lottery
It’ll be no mystery
I’ll be one number off, it never fails
And if I pick the horses
The horse I pick of course is
A shapeshifting animal that turns into a snail

Now I was complaining
About all of my failings
Me, last in luck, thought I’d toot my horn
But I was put in my place
By a man without a face
It turns out that he had not even been born

Astonishing what you can write in an hour. Love the Johnny Cash style, you make it sound so easy. A few chuckles here, like hearing, "But I won't thank Jesus." "walked into a wall," "suck less." But mostly how you weave the same words into different meanings. All so clever. And of course, glad it ends with a moral to the story.

We bet on the same horse! Like others I love your luckless/suck less rhyme and the luck that walked into a wall. Music works great.

Love this! This song would go over well at a pub gig.

Love the clever lyrics! Can hear this being done with a full bluegrass band behind it and harmonies on the chorus.

So much fun and feels so fleshed out for a skirmish! "My luck took a walk, and walked into a wall" is probably my favorite line and encapsulates the prompt so well. The repeating "k" sound hits home the comedy of it all. Thanks for making me laugh - much needed!

I love the snark! And it's a perfect response to the skirmish prompt. I love your rhyme scheme (luckless/suck less) too.

yeah, what they said. that plunky thumpy guitar is so good. and it has been so much fun hearing your voice grow over the DECADES. (man, we's old, yeah?)

Love this, Mike. The perfect Johnny Cash song. A little confused by the last verse but otherwise perfect and "the shapeshifting animal that turns into a snail" is an excellent line!

Smash into cash mode. Very well done Mike, a singalong. Get um all singing luck of the luckless. And rhyming it with suck less. Ha ha

Well, this was fun as could be. Living in conservative small towns most of my life, I just got to know some Jewish friends this past year living in a bigger Metropolitan area, My first time in a synagogue was in December. I played bass for a group of ladies performing Bare Naked Ladies Lights of Hanukkah song.

"The luck of the luckless" is a great line. I also love the "suck less" rhyme, ha! Great little turns of phrases and lovely song in general. Nice skirmishing
