Liner Notes

Another true story from my past. I spent nearly an entire year living in a caravan on a farm. The van was parked beneath a walnut tree. This is what happened.

Lyrics

(G) I parked my caravan under a walnut tree
(D) Oh all those nuts are gonna (G) be for me!
I was happy as a camper can be
(D) Oh all those nuts are gonna (C) be for (G) me!

But when (Em) autumn came and they started to drop
(D) I was in for a hell of a shock
(Em) Out of the tree those nuts would leap
Their (A) clang on the roof would keep (D) me from sleep
They (C) banged and clattered so (G) readily
(D) Oh all those nuts will be the (C) death of (G) me

(G) I parked my caravan under a walnut tree
(D) Oh those nuts will be the (G) death of me!
I was unhappy as a camper can be
(D) Oh all those nuts will be the (C) death of (G) me!

I (Em) took an old carpet and laid it on the roof
But I forg(D)ot that wool is not waterproof
The (Em) nuts on the roof were beginning to rot
Giving (A) off a black dye that (D) they begot
It (C) ran down the walls (G) mixed with the rain
And (D) cleaning it off was a (C) real (G) pain

What (Bm) seems like a blessing can soon be a curse
(Em) Making a happy time become adverse
And (Bm) soon it leads from bad to worse
And you're (A)cursing the entire (D) universe

(G) I had parked my van under a walnut tree
(D) Oh all those nuts were gonna (G) be for me!
But those dirty sticky nuts our fate had sealed
And we (D) moved our caravan to an (C) open (G) field!

(G) I parked my caravan in an open field
Worse (D) things to come would soon (C) be re(G)vealed....
But that's a story for another day

So funny! And I relate (sort of)... we used to have a scraggly-looking apple tree that dropped several tons of tiny apples on our roof every fall until we finally took it down. Ooooo I love the cliffhanger ending!

ha ha great story and a great moral about how fixes often make things even worse! excellent

Great story!! We have chestnut trees on our street, and fall is full of the sound of chestnuts clanking onto the roofs and bonnets of the parked cars. Many of which have permanent dents as a result, because gravity is a son of a gun ;) We definitely need that song about the open field!

Brilliant. Had me smiling and laughing (sorry!) at your misfortunate! Love the way the chorus changes to continue the tale you were telling.
But now I want a song about what went wrong in the open field! I'm thinking a bull or cow ...

Brilliant storytelling and great calypso.

They sure can be loud! I have two trees. This is a great story, and I love how you can take a true story and make a great song from it!

Love the playful sound! I can picture this sung at a campfire, with pauses for laughter and lots of urging for the next story.

As the owner of a few walnut trees, I am familiar with the clatter. Good cheerful tune, fun story.
