Most of us have heard of the trope that folk music is "Three Chords and the Truth." This is also often applied to country-western music. There's even a song by Chase Rice with that title (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WO8rU4B5gDA).

So I got to thinking how many chords you'd need for a lie... and here we are. Enjoy.

Lyrics

(Capo 1)

V1
C
Such a blue and sunny day
Am
We took the car and got away
F G
Down to the beach where nothing seems to change
C
Such a dark and starry night
Am
We set the piled-up logs alight
F G
And warmed ourselves by all the dancing flames

V2
Honesty is not our game
Little white lies all the same
Making us forget that love is real
Holding hands and loving looks
Hiding truth behind the books
Of lies and liars bringing love to heel

Chorus
Am F
Just four chords and a little lie
Am G
‘Cause three chords and the truth just didn’t fly
Am F
Just four chords and a little bitty lie
Am G
We’re finding out the truth by and by

V3
Such a brilliant memory
It was down to you and me
“I do” before an altar quickly raised
Such a bitter treachery
It was either you or me
Betrayal and the end of all our days

CHORUS

Bridge
F
Remember when you asked me
Am
About my old guitar
G Am
Three chords and the truth, I said to you
F
You said that truth was not so much
Am
But when I pressed, you shunned my touch
F G
I should have known that it was never true

V4
There’s nothing left to say to you
After everything that we went through
We still are working on a place to start
Just four chords and a little lie
We’ll both confess here by and by
Will we ever heal this broken heart?

CHORUS

CHORUS 2

(‘Cause it was)
Just four chords and a little lie
‘Cause three chords and the truth would never fly
Just four chords and one little bitty lie
We’re finding out the truth by and by

OUTTRO
C
By and by

(C Am F G C)

More sincere-sounding than I expected from this title (not a bad thing). What a clever way to play with the "rules" of music!

Brilliant inspiration for an intriguing song.

@tawny249 I've made it my goal to write the story behind this song. We might make it a story/song, but I'd like it to be told after the song in a circle.

clever idea well executed

This is a clever concept, and I think you pulled it off. I like your choice of words for a lot of the rhymes, too. Makes you want to know what the story was behind the lyrics.
