The Emperor's New Clothes

Liner Notes

This song is about the danger of people with an ulterior motive peddling hate on social media,

For those outside the UK, we recently had several days of public disorder and rioting by right wing extremist groups. This was following the tragic murder of three very young girls who were at a Taylor Swift themed school summer holiday dance class.

The disorder was ignited and fuelled by a profusion of misinformation and fake postings on social media. While the perpetrator of the murders appears to be totally unrelated to the children and there was no apparent motive for his attack on the children and class leaders, a number of stories quickly went viral naming the suspect as a Muslim and an illegal migrant (which he isn't).

The right wing extremists then vented their anger on hotels housing asylum seekers and Mosques. This resulted in full scale riots, with bricks and fire bombs being thrown at police who were protecting the innocent occupants of the buildings and looting of local businesses.

It feels to me like there is a modern trend of making inflammatory and exaggerated stories on-line to stir up fear and hate against people from all sides which quickly gain traction..

I sometimes wonder, what easier way is there to beat your enemy than to divide them and get them fighting among themselves?

Why the Emperor's New Clothes? Well if you know the fairy story, it is about the power of suggestion and people unquestionably believing what everyone is saying and ignoring the facts in case they end up as outcasts.

For those interested in the gear - It was recorded on a Zoom R8. There were 3 tracks with an Epiphone SG guitar (using two of the internal distortion effects built into the R8) and the bass is a Squire Precision. There are three vocal tracks - recorded with the R8 internal mics, two are slightly panned left and right to give depth and again they use the internal reverb and effects of the R8.

Lyrics

Hold on, hold on, hold on,
Hold on, hold on, hold on,

You're tearing up the rules,
Like some elementary fools,
You say you've seen the light,
And that it's only you that's right,
I'm sure it used to be,
That I was free to disagree,

But, hold on to all,
Those things you want to say,
'Cos the Emperor's new clothes are on display yeah,
The Emperor's new clothes are on display yeah.

If I hold a certain view,
It doesn't mean that I hate you,
Don't take it personally,
If I choose to disagree,
We can both be just as right,
And I have no wish to fight,

So, hold on to all,
Those things you want to say,
'Cos the Emperor's new clothes are on display yeah,
The Emperor's new clothes are on display yeah.

It seems like every day,
Something new gets in the way,
To crush simplicity,
And promote new enemies,
It's like Caesar used to say,
Divide and conquer is the way

So, hold on to all,
Those things you want to say,
'Cos the Emperor's new clothes are on display yeah,
The Emperor's new clothes are on display yeah.
The Emperor's new clothes are on display yeah.
Emperor's new clothes are on display yeah.

The whole thing hits for me. Love the bass/guitar groove and the synth. But really, it's a great, catchy tune, so I don't want to get down into the weeds of analysis. Now I wonder what the Emperor's old clothes were like

That's a nice crunch to the guitar chords in the verse.
[Did you know I was going to say that?]

The triple tracked vox work well -- a more natural sound to my ears, yet still with a presence.

Cool music, brilliant message. The sort of clever lyrics my year's high-school indie rock band wrote. Love it!

Everybody: Do *not* readily believe what you read online in forums and social media, and do not trust likes, view counts, and recommendations. Those things are swarmed by fake accounts and information warriors. The UK riots for example were triggered in part by a Russian account.

This is so well written and performed! Divide and conquer has been how so many have gotten away with atrocities! Sounds great and it's very needed right now!
