Got to thinking about all those kids who went through doors or portals to other places... and then my inner child demanded to know the road to all those places. And now there's a song. Enjoy.

Lyrics

(Capo 3)

V1
C D Em Em7
Alice told me tales of how she used to be
C D Em Em7
A little girl escaping to where none can see
C D Em Em7
She said she found Wonderland and told me true
Am7 D
She told me just exactly what I have to do

V2
Dorothy said how the road leads ever on
Holding to your friends as you are ever drawn
Toward the Emerald City and the witches’ lair
Maybe you are walking into Neverwhere

CHORUS
Am7 G
Time to go to sleep; it’s time for bed
Am7 Em Em7
Time to go and rest your weary head
Am7 G
Time for slumber, now it’s time to dream
Am7 D
Time to let it go

Am7 G
Time for you to find the road to Neverwhere
Am7 Em Em7
They’ll tell you all about it, but it’s never there
Am7 G
Time to find the wind, the door, the mirror bright
Am7 D
Time for you to go

V3
Lucy told me of the lamp-post in the wood
Where once a tree of purity had grown and stood
She couldn’t tell me more than that, she said to me
We all must find our own way to the shining sea

V4
Meg and Calvin told me of the tesseract
Such a scary name for such a simple act
It took them to the deepest, darkest ways of space
But both of them were yearning for a better place

CHORUS

V5
Time runs faster as I grow and change
Childhood runs behind me, oh, it’s very strange
Sometimes I see the Cheshire smiling from a tree
Sometimes, I don’t know what to make of me

V6
I’m never sure if it is real or just a game
They chase the white stag down, so I will do the same
A rabbit hurries past me in a rushed affair
I’ll never figure out the road to Neverwhere

CHORUS
Time to go to sleep; it’s time for bed
Time to go and rest my weary head
Time for slumber, now it’s time to dream
Time to let it go

Time for me to find the road to Neverwhere
They tell me all about it, but it’s never there
Time to find the wind, the door, the mirror bright
Time for me to go

OUTTRO
Am7 D
Time for me to go
Am7 D G
Don’t look for me, it’s time for me to go

(end: G Em Em7 Am7 D G)

This is really good! Feels like classic filk, but with a bit more nuance. I love the kind of wistful feel in the chorus, it's the sense that you keep reaching for something you're decently sure you can't find, but the hope lingers. Nice use of the 7th chords, too. They felt right here.

What a perfect song for filk! Might see this on the Pegasus ballot some day.

Lovely tune, and I enjoy the light treatment of the music in this recording.

I like this one a lot Griff. Besides the lyrics in general, I really like the structure with the semi-repeated lines with different rhymes.

This one moves me deeply. Such a sweet lullaby with so many references skillfully woven in between the lines. You’ve chosen four magical stories and brought them together in a way that people seeking for magic and wonder fully understand. Gentle delivery and such wistful words.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who had been looking for a door. I found mine. Keep looking.

Fine evocation of those childhood books that had us all enthralled with the "other worlds" that our heroes and heroines explored along with us.

I especially liked this couplet - neat rhyme usage here:

"Time for you to find the road to Neverwhere
They’ll tell you all about it, but it’s never there"
