The Broken Heart's Handbook

by @andrea

There is no demo for this song.

Liner Notes

I started this before I went away on vacation, and then tortured myself with the a few parts after I got back on Sunday. It might still need some work, but I feel ready enough to post.

I wrote this to be a theatrical piece. At least that is how I imagine it. The lines in parentheses are meant to be spoken or sang as an aside).

Feel free to offer suggestions for improvement. Thanks :)

Lyrics

Intro
Love’s a magical wand
Love’s a demon scythe
What one hand gives, the other takes
Happiness and heartbreak
Yes, men will come and go
But I’m here to let you know
With some simple advice
Everything will be alright

Chorus
The Broken Heart’s Handbook
Is all that you need
To get you back on your feet
The Broken Hearts Handbook
Is tested and true
And has only one rule
When love turns the tables
You’ve got to wipe the slate clean
No if, ands, or buts, and no in-betweens
When love becomes messy
You’ve got to wipe the slate clean
(I’ll explain what I mean)

V1
First find/obtain a large box
Or two, maybe three
And scour the house
For his left-over things

Throw in his toothbrush
And half used old spice
Book on the nightstand
And damn bright reading light

His worn favorite shirt
That always looked dirty
His beer in the fridge
And spare set of house keys
(yeah, he’ll never need these)

Chorus
The Broken Heart’s Handbook
Is all that you need
To get you back on your feet
The Broken Hearts Handbook
Is tested and true
And has only one rule
When love turns the tables
You’ve got to wipe the slate clean
No if, ands, or buts, and no in-betweens
When love becomes messy
You’ve got to wipe the slate clean
(Do you know what I mean)

V2
It’s time to dig deeper
If you want to be truly free
Erase from existence
Each stubborn memory

Reset your passwords
Delete all his shows
Remove all connections
Numbers, friends and photos

Never surrender
And cast your net wide
Pieces forgotten
Can turn the strongest of tides
(Honey, it’s do or die)

Chorus
The Broken Heart’s Handbook
Is all that you need
To get you back on your feet
The Broken Hearts Handbook
Is tested and true
And has only one rule
When love turns the tables
You’ve got to wipe the slate clean
No if, ands, or buts, and no in-betweens
When love becomes messy
You’ve got to wipe the slate clean
(Now you know what I mean)

Outro
Love can be the giver
Love can be the crook
When broken hearts need a hand
Follow the book

Great lines abound!! This will be a killer tune! Love the lines:

"You’ve got to wipe the slate clean
No if, ands, or buts, and no in-betweens"

and the outro ties it all up with a bow! Write on!!

I love how the concise outro sums up the wonderfully creative and well penned story so well. Wonderful concept for a song that is very well developed and structured. It will work very as a theatrical piece and has a wonderfully magical quality that is perfect for the stage!
