Porch Swings And Diamond Rings

by @jerrypettit

Liner Notes

One of my early childhood memories is of my 200-pound-plus grandmother settling down on a porch swing (although maybe it was a hammock), and telling us all, "Goodbye, folks!" just as the swing/hammock broke under her weight and she fell to her death.

No, actually she didn't fall to her death. She just fell onto her back. While everyone around me ran to her aid in horror, I was stifling giggles and shuffled backwards, unobservered, back in through the front door, snorting a little and fighting back tears of laughter. Only to see that my mother was already in there stifling her own giggles. We genuinely didn't know if Granny was alive or dead and we were both hysterically stifling our laughter. One of my favorite childhood memories.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the song!

PORCH SWINGS AND DIAMOND RINGS

There's a house down on Willow,
with a wide front porch,
Where the oak trees whisper secrets
in the twilight's red torch.
We'd sway slow on that swing,
just a pair of young teens,
Dreamin' 'bout our forever,
in our faded blue jeans.

CHORUS:
From porch swings to diamond rings,
Lazy days become great things.
Oh, how simple love begins,
From sweet whispers to hearts that sing.

Years rolled like the river,
past the banks of our youth,
Love grew deeper,
with each tender truth.
On that swing, I took your hand,
Showed a ring, became your man.

CHORUS:
From porch swings to diamond rings,
Lazy days become great things.
Oh, how simple love begins,
From sweet whispers to hearts that sing.

I remember how the stars agreed,
When you whispered back
on that swing to me.
Now on that same porch,
grandkids at our knee,
Still swinging,
where we're meant to be.

The swing is creaky,
like the bones it bears,
But strong as our love,
through the years it wears.
And that ring you have,
shines as it did before,
On this porch,
like in the days of yore.

CHORUS:
From porch swings to diamond rings,
Lazy days become great things.
Oh, how simple love begins,
From sweet whispers to hearts that sing.

I love how the porch swing is the tie through the years. That works beautifully. This a sweet and touching. Love the soft music and smooth vocals. Glad this story was a bit different than the liner notes, but I'm glad you shared that too! (Although I'm a little mad when you wrote your grandma died. I was relieved she didn't!)

I don't know how you come up with such consistently excellent titles, lyrics and music Jerry, but you do and each one is so impressive and may I say, this one in particular, is a fine example...

Yup I would have laughed as well, great line/ title careful Jerry you may be going soft! It’s a nice song all round. Oh and ps. Obscure doesn’t mean not American. :-)

What a great title - it is what brought me in. Your songs feel like a big hug - they are so warm and inviting. Enchanting melodies, gorgeous vocals and such a smooth instrumental track. This song is 100% delightful. Oh my goodness the story in your liner notes - I can see what it is still such a vivid memory!

Lovely sentimental song! This has a swing to it ! Keep up the great work

I like these straight-ahead love songs, bursting with nostalgic sentiments. much better than sullen break-up songs. and this one is one of your best, notwithstanding the rather grotesque liner notes that led me to expect Southern gothic, not west coast romanticism.

Great sounding song. We need more love out there that's for sure. Enjoyed listening!

I had to laugh at that memory, but I have my own porch swing and it brings back such wonderful memories. I love the part about bones squeaking like swing. Simply devine!

@sbs
Nice melody - would never know the story behind it - lol! I think my funny grandmother story is when we were camping in the mountains and my cousin Ted thought it was just his sister and me in the restroom - and he started singing “There’s a place in France where they wear no underpants” - having no idea our grandmother was in there, too! She came out giving him the what for - lol!
