Scoundrels That We Are

by @freshspotlessyouth

Liner Notes

#alternative/indie
We here at the freshspotlessyouth collective live in permanent exile from craft. We take refuge where we can, which is definitely not where we might choose to take refuge. Beggars can't be choosers

Lyrics

Cause and effect
And the moment between
During which the scoundrel starts to breathe (blink)

A haunted machine
Exiled from craft
Taking refuge in art
That’s the kind of scoundrels that we are
We do our part
Picking up the pieces in the dark

That’s the kind of scoundrels that we are
That’s the kind of scoundrels that we are

Stringing beads
And baking tarts
We do our part
That’s the kind of scoundrels that we are
That’s the kind of scoundrels that we are

(So much for our specious authenticity)

There's a dark muscularity to the guitar here that plays off nicely against the more delicate, thoughtful vocals, elevating the lyrics to something tension-filled and vaguely mysterious (and deeply impactful). It's a wonderful effect, and, as usual, a very nice song!

True that! Cool and moody vibe, I like your stuff!

wondering where FSY would take refuge by choice. ooo that great guitar from the last song is back. it deserved a recall

Really good lyrics -- enigmatic, as always, and filled with great images (haunted machine, stringing beads). Nice reverby atmosphere, with the electric guitar a cool mood setter.

Yeah, I'm liking that guitar tone, too--very 70s...which, to me, was when music was at its best. Loved the vocal, too. Great job! ❤️

i prefer your scoundrel art to the crafty products of the infernal celebrity cult.

‘Stringing beads and baking tarts / That’s the kind of scoundrels that we are’ 😂 Love how that’s set to such an ominous, dark up/down minor chord sequence. Really enjoyed the whole atmosphere of this one, the timbre of the guitars and the sense of space.

I enjoyed this. The guitar and vox had a murky or fuzzy quality to them that contributed nicely to the overall vibe. Short but sweet

@sbs
That guitar has a delicious 70s feel to it. The vocals sell the idea that we are the scoundrels that we are. May be my favorite of yours!
