Lyrics

I can tell by the way you avoid my gaze
You no longer want me
It's been going on for days
I guess we're waiting for you to see

The first time I held your hand I fell in love
But those old memories aren't enough
I see it in your eyes
A hurt you can't disguise
When you look at me

I see it in the way you hang your head
The way you hide your tears
I can tell by the words you've left unsaid
The way you disappear

The first time I held your hand I fell in love
But those old memories aren't enough
I see it in your eyes
A hurt you can't disguise
When you look at me

And I don't think you know
How you truly feel
When lovers fade to friends it feels unreal

The first time I held your hand I fell in love
But those old memories aren't enough
I see it in your eyes
A hurt you can't disguise
When you look at me

Classic rhyming couplets . The sad lyrics are punctuated with those minor chords and the perfect tempo. The perfect trifecta!

As far the genre of the song, you tagged it as folk and americana, and those fit. The problem with those genres primarily being they are so expansive, especially Americana which just seems to be a bucket that exists for anything that doesn't squarely land in the pop category or other genre specific songs. Metal has (had) the same problem and took the opposite route and just over classified everything. With that said, I would call it indie folk or folk rock, adjacent to Iron and Wine even going back to Crosby, Stills, Nash.

Beautiful song, love the guitar work. The sonic space fits the theme really well, and the situation can be heard expressed in the music and especially the vocals. "tell by the words you've left unsaid" and "lovers fade to friends it feels unreal", liked those lines.

I dunno how you do it but the consistently excellent lyrics you write are awesome. I also have no idea what genre to put this in lol

You have an incredibly lovely way of playing guitar, and this is no exception. Beautifully poignant song.

How gorgeous... The sorrowful chord progression, the expressive guitar work, the heartfelt vocals... and those stirring lyrics that immediately resonate with something we probably all experienced.
"When lovers fade to friends it feels unreal" This line is particularly striking. So beautiful, and so painfully evocative.
I don't know what genre this is, but I love the song.
