Trying To Get Back To You

Liner Notes

#acousticonetake #acoustic #singersongwriter

It's been and odd season of being fairly productive without feeling especially inspired. I have more than a handful of songs half written and that's a bit of foreign territory for me. For the most part, I just finish something and then listen back later to see if I like it or not. This is kind of my attempt at doing that in the hour or so I had before we leave for St. Louis.

Lyrics

I don't want to be your one way street
Pointing you in the wrong way
Construction project is incomplete
Signs saying detour almost everyday

I don't want to be another dead end
Causing you to turn around
Expecting trouble just around the bend
The next bridge is lying in pieces on the ground

I'm just trying to get back to you
Traffic's tight and I can't get through
Tired of fighting through the rush hour jam
Trying to get back to where it all began
I'm just trying to get back to you again

I don't want to be a road closed sign
Causing another delay
Don't wanna be why you can't make time
Why you can never get started on your way

I'm just trying to get back to you
Traffic's tight and I can't get through
Tired of fighting through the rush hour jam
Trying to get back to where it all began
I'm just trying to get back to you again

I'll keep driving towards the dawn
Hoping when I get there you won't be gone
And I promise I won't be the reason we can't get along
Can't find our way

I'm just trying to get back to you
Traffic's tight and I can't get through
Tired of fighting through the rush hour jam
Trying to get back to where it all began
I'm just trying to get back to you again

after reading your liner notes i thought of this as a song TO your unfinished songs. most particularly the part about the bridge lying in pieces `:] the melody is very sweet.

they recently wound up the construction on the railroad crossing by work so i have LOTS of mental imagery for detours and construction work and traffic jams.

If it makes sense it’s rhyming words but not music, which makes it interesting. Good hookline as well.

Always love a good traveling song, and this feels like a traveling song with all the road references and theme. Feel like the strumming pattern also has a traveling feel too, but one that is starting and stopping, which fits the theme perfectly. If only I had a GPS for life. Great song.

Interesting how you can hear this as sung to a lover or to your creativity or muse or something. I thought of the second interpretation after I went back and read the liner noted. I like both a lot. I’m also trying to get out of my own way, so maybe I’ll go with that one for this season.

First, it's great to hear you again! Second, I too have that productive-yet-uninspired feeling.
Awesome piece of jangly folk here. Poignant guitar/vocal take. I like this one a lot!
