@unknownbecky suggested "Sports" as a prompt for this week's Song Circle. I missed the meeting to go to a parking lot picnic with my daughter, but I did write a song. This one is a reminder to myself to go ahead and embrace connection and imperfection.

Lyrics

Be an Olympic Swimmer

I could be an olympic swimmer
I could coach basketball
I could set a couple world records
I could try to break 'em all

But I sit on my couch
And I scroll on my phone
I sit by myself
I feel so alone

I could write a mystery novel
I could write a country song
I could make people listen
I could make 'em all sing along

If I didn't sit on my couch
If I didn't scroll on my phone
But I sit by myself
I feel so alone

I could ask a friend to dinner
I could give a friend a shout
I could reach out to someone
I could think about going out

When I sit on my couch
And I scroll on my phone
When I sit by myself
Cause I feel so alone

I could be an olympic swimmer

Nice social comment/observation - The saddest thing is that there are so many people who sit on the sofa scrolling on their phones who don't even have the thoughts about what they could have been let alone the aspirations to do it.

Despite the minor chords, there's a jauntiness to this tune that belies the devastating lyrics. This is a song about wasted potential, which is incredibly sad, and you really bring it home through your singing. Great work.

I love how the weight of the things the person could do grows over the course of the song (great vocals in the weightiest part too!). Really effective portrayal of someone who is just as far from being able to phone a friend as they are from being an Olympic swimmer. I've definitely been there on my worst days, and this is one of the best depictions I've heard of the feeling in a long while.

With the Olympics filling the airwaves, it's about time someone created a theme song for those of us who are not adept at athletic endeavours. Thanks for stepping up to the task and entertaining us as well.

I like the bold guitar strums at the start of the song and in between the sections. Enjoyed the chorus, the delivery of the "I feel so alone" is great, and something I connect to. I don't know if this is what you intended, but I was a getting deeper sense from the verses that echo the chorus, coming from the fact that all things you mention, such as being an olympic simmer and setting records, is not something that is easy to do (or even capable of doing really), maybe that is even easier than getting people to listen . The verses about social circumstance has an even bigger impact to me because maybe that is even harder than Olympic gold for some.

Missed you at the song circle but a parking lot picnic with your daughter sounds lovely! Glad I got to hear the song from the prompt. Good job.

Oh wow that is very powerful. The truth in this song! You took the sports prompt and injected it with a deep and apt comment on modern life. Love your folky, country sound too.

I could pass by your song and not leave a comment, but being a sport here it is. Lots of folks do the same as this person, year in and out, and think of all the things they could do. A sad scenario I think. A song well played.

nice layout of what we all could do if we got off our asses. love your singing here, the way you sometimes stretch out the worlds and on other times chop them off. good, simple melody suffices to keep the lyrics in the forefront.

We had a "sports" prompt for a skirmish last weekend. I really like your take on this prompt - wonderful contrast between what could be and what is. I like the way you treated the chorus melodically also - staying on that one note over the changing guitar chords and then that slight departure on the last line. Great guitar strum too - it really keeps the song moving and ups the intensity in the chorus. Well done!
