Mossy Logs

Liner Notes

#lofi

In my mind, a dead song is actually part of this song. I was trying and failing to record a song that wasn't coming together. I just picked up in the middle of that one and ran in this direction. Here's a fragment of the lyric:

What will you do with this song
Maybe you’ll watch it dissolve
Maybe you’ll stand up
Stretch your legs
And press pause
Do the dishes
Eat a peach
Pet a dog

What will you do with this song?
If we’re agreed it be one
Let’s say a tree in some Cambrian glen
Held the centuries
Then simply gave in
What can you do with that song?

Lyrics

Come nigh!

What can you do with a song?
Some are good
Some are bad
Some aren’t songs at all
No no!
They’re not songs at all
No no!
What can you do with those songs?

Some are good
Some are bad
Some are mossy logs
Oh oh!
What can you do with those songs?

Quite poignant. Has an unfinished finish to my ears. I could hear a bright instrumental coming in that rises above the mossy log, and then wanders off.

Great image of mossy logs. That brings history and weathering and other living creatures into the mix, which is what happens to songs! People sing them, they pass into history, they show their age, and some turn fuzzy green. Very calm and direct.

I love what this song (and your liner notes for that matter) say about the creative process. For me, the point is simply that they exist and that’s enough. Also kudos on the production here - the guitar and drums sound perfect, and then you’ve got so many lovely elements subtly nestled in the background. Particularly enjoyed the little hints of brass breaking through. Well done, sir!

the song answers its own question. just do it and get it out
and ya did and nicely as well.

I find the text very poetic! You often have references to nature in your texts... of course I like that very much. Also because you use these metaphors very delicately.
To equate songs that are still waiting with mossy logs! You have to come up with this metaphor first!
Musically there is something very tender and gentle about it.
Very very nice!

Omg my very favorite part is the synthy bit on the last verse!

Very wise. Very lovely, Your delivery is entrancing as always. Another entrancing moment of musical magic.

you show us inthis very song what you can do with a song that i not working. keep the chorus and come up with some better verses. i love what you have here much better than the sample of the dead song displayed in the liner notes. what you have recorded is far from dead.

Some are good and some are bad true...but this is undeniably very good indeed...
Short and very sweet!

You got a lot into 1:17! This sounds like a song slowly dissolving into a brilliant sunset. Nice keyboard (?) in the background. Great title!

Again sleek and on point…I like your short songs (and your long ones), this probably doesn’t make sense… but this sparks associations to getting a hug from a forgotten Polaroid moment you rediscover under the fridge

This has potential. I really like the guitar, chords, and the idea. Maybe you should finish it!?

@sbs
The opening note reminded me of “Nights in White Satin” - I know - one note. Maybe two - lol! But my ears love to search for familiar notes.

But I have to say you make such a simple song sound amazing! So glad you’re posting. I keep checking but don’t see a lot of *my* regulars. Nice to listen to when I do.
