As a fella once said, "one take is all it takes." This song just bubbled up fully formed; my muse must be annoyed at our glacial pace this time around. It's late so I didn't bother with fleshing it out, but I think that's what the song wanted anyhow.

Lyrics

I know what makes my heart sing
I hear it humming through everything
Like the train that’s running down a quarter mile
Like the feeling I’m gonna be gone a while

I know what makes my heart sing
It buzzes when I strum the strings
Cuz you know I’d never get too far
If I didn’t have this old guitar
I know what makes my heart sing

All the stories that I know so well
Are the ones I never set to tell
I just keep on moving, come what may
And things usually work out okay

And the stories, I don’t write them down
I just plant them shallow in the ground
Then I pour a little water on
So they’ll stand long after I am gone
I know what makes my heart sing

The mountains and the desert sky
The way the pines trees reach so high
The way this country slowly rolls
From Oregon to Ohio

I’ve been end to end and side to side
And on one thing I have relied
Even in my times of deepest doubt
There are always people helping out
I know what makes my heart sing

Oh, wow, Carley - this is so simply, movingly perfect. The gentle way you sing and play it. The absolute sincerity in every word. And that one word shallow - which gives this concrete specific detail that blooms in the world of feelings. I hope the kids in your classes and then the rest of the kids and grown ups in the world hear it. It feels like an antidote for everything that anyone claims is wrong with the world.

This is so lovely: sweet and simple and hopeful. And your vocals are just perfect for it.

Sounds like an old standard to me :) That is a great phrase "I know what makes my heart sing". Love that 3rd chord where it goes minor. I want to hear harmonies on it as it progresses and maybe a violin in there. Could maybe use a bridge, but I like it a lot as is.

This song reminds me of a word from yoga practice - "Santosha" which is about having gratitude for where you are in life so you can move forward. Beautifully done.

I love this gentle, simple song. I super relate to the words. Maybe because my head's been in my Midwest years lately for some reason. Maybe because I love traveling around. Maybe for other reasons.

What a lovely song. You have a wonderful voice and guitar style. I love the lyrics and the way the song flows and the way you pause in the second to last verse. I will be listening to this song over and over. Thanks for providing it to all of us!

this begs to stay simple. Glad you put it out there how it is. It's giving Joan Baez 60's Greenwich Village vibes. I dig it.

yup you know how to let the muse do its thing. its very freeing. of course you then have the ability to make it exceptionally good. this has great pace allowing the lyrics to live and breathe
