14. Those Were The Nights

Liner Notes

2nd last track that, like Phantoms, Anemoia, and track 1, feels a LOT older than it is because I recorded most of it pretty quickly after writing. I wanted a song with a dance-y feeling that also serves as a crescendo to the album and its ideas. A sad rager, you see? It's a little pick-me-up before the final, slow track. It finishes up the themes of nostalgia and wraps up some of the other ideas on the project, and pushes us forward to the finish line. I remember writing this and basing the piano progression on FaceTime With My Mom (Tonight) by Bo Burnham. Hell of a pull, but it ended up with this.

A little production tidbit, this is where learned how to be a proper Skrillex and side-chain, which is funny because it's all buried in the final mix anyways so like, does it matter? No, but hey, I'm not good with technology so it's cool that I bothered to learn anything new!

Anyways, glad that this is finally being released so I don't have to think of it anymore, it's been a long, miserable journey! But we're here, and I can move on to the other plans in my head!

Lyrics

Verse 1:
These are the nights
I will remember
In late December,
As I search for sleep.

I count the stucco
On the ceiling,
The surface peeling
To the paint underneath.

I know these thoughts
Are gonna kill me,
The way they fill me
With a deep, dark dread.

I'm afraid the sadness
That it feeds me,
Will never leave me,
'Til the day I'm dead.

Refrain:
Hope for the best,
But pray for just better.
Into the storm,
Or wait out the weather?

Verse 2:
These are the nights
I miss the old days;
The family gatherings,
And the warmth inside.

If only I knew
It was fleeting,
Instead of leaving,
Oh, I might have tried.

Around the fire
I was patient,
I counted constellations
From a time before.

Those conversations
With my father
Were like no other,
I just want one more.

Refrain 2:
Float through the moments,
And go through the motions.
One day you'll notice
That those days are over.

Verse 3:
These are the nights
Their tongues have tasted,
They wandered wasted
Through the dead-end streets,

And brick-by-brick
They built a castle,
When they caught the last call,
With the Kings and the Queens.

I spent my daydreams
In the weekends,
Though some occasions
I would feel the light.

Now all I feel
Is paranoia,
And Anemoia
Is a friend of mine.

Refrain 3:
Don't get me wrong
When I get it right:
These are the days,
But those were the nights.

Verse 4:
Those were the nights
I couldn't get through,
Until I met you,
And you helped me rest.

I'll take every moment
As the last one;
The moments, they will pass on,
Like a wave at the crest.

When all the tides have
Overcome us
And the universe is lawless,
Maybe then we'll see

That on the surface
Are reflections
That show our imperfections
As they're meant to be.

Final Refrain:

Hope for the best,
But pray for just better.
Into the storm,
Or wait out the weather?

Float through the moments,
And go through the motions.
One day you'll notice
That those days are over.

Don't get me wrong
When I get it right:
These are the days,
But those were the nights.

These are the days,
But those were the nights.
These are the days,
But those were the nights.

Sounds like facility with the technology on my end! I like how the melody dips low into your vocal range's depths, and the beat has a racing heartbeat or running footsteps vibe. Rich and interesting to listen to -- a great track.

I like the vocals and overall vibe. Nice arranging.
