The School Of Life And Love

Liner Notes

Accidentally uploaded a somewhat "unfinished" version and there it sat for a couple of minutes in its ZONGY ingloriousness--but I was listening to my YouTube version as I was posting it and even my decrepit failing ears could tell it was "muddy" and not the usual pristinely mixed and mastered version that My Fans have become used to...so I fixed it. Let's try, try again... I hope you enjoy the song!

THE SCHOOL OF LIFE AND LOVE

Walked through the doors at dawn,
with my heart upon my sleeve,
A freshman in the halls of hope,
so young and so naive.
First class was Heartbreak 101,
it taught me how to cry,
I learned to pick the pieces up
when a part of me has died.

CHORUS:
In THE SCHOOL OF LIFE AND LOVE,
You get tested in ways
that you never thought of.
From heartache to healing,
when push comes to shove,
Good luck in graduating from
THE SCHOOL OF LIFE AND LOVE.

So I took a course in Joy,
and it was summer every day,
Laughter was the lesson,
we all danced the nights away.
But the curriculum always changes,
as the fall winds start to blow,
I guess a couple failing grades
taught me the value of letting go.

CHORUS:
In THE SCHOOL OF LIFE AND LOVE,
You get tested in ways
that you never thought of.
From heartache to healing,
when push comes to shove,
Good luck in graduating from
THE SCHOOL OF LIFE AND LOVE.

GUITAR SOLO

Oh, and there's really no diploma
you can ever call your own,
Every tear and every smile,
just another stepping stone.
Old Professor Time
just gives the toughest tests,
With every beat of our hearts,
we learn what happens next.

Recovery wrote my thesis,
resilience my guide,
I found strength in my story,
hope helped me grow inside.
Now I try and tutor new hearts,
the young just starting to dream,
Sharing chapters of my choices,
and what love really means.

CHORUS:
In THE SCHOOL OF LIFE AND LOVE,
You get tested in ways
that you never thought of.
From heartache to healing,
when push comes to shove,
Good luck in graduating from
THE SCHOOL OF LIFE AND LOVE.

Beautiful story telling, singing and playing. Nostalgic and moving.

Nostalgic and full of good lesson reminders. I like the rhymes in particular and the storytelling style of writing with a moral style ending to boot. Nice guitars too!

good storytelling in that reflective style. the changes into the chorus is really good. i like the faster pace here. big instrumentation on this.

Oh boy, Jerry--you've got a whole album full of sonic candy rolled into one song here. Love the jangly guitars, the wonderful vocal (delicious harmonies!), the clever lyric idea and how you've captured it. That melody on the chorus is a real earworm for sure.

My mom used to make this seven layer chocolate cake that I once woke up craving in the middle of the night, only to find my dad in the kitchen already digging in. He said it was "calling to him". I expect I'll be similarly sneaking to my computer later for another bite of this one.

This is really well done- enjoyable and something we can all, i think, relate to!

and yeah, love that chorus and how you phrased it vocally. and what a great final verse, really sums it up well!

i love the way you stretch out the title words at the beginning of each chorus. it is one of those unforgettable moments that makes me long for the chorus to come around again. not that the verses are any less. you have compressed a lifetime of failing grades into an overture to wisdom.

Gee, I think I went to that school. I'm still waiting for my diploma.

Another solid song, Jerry, with lots of good lyrical lines to keep the listener interested.

Great theme! I like the bits of wisdom tucked inside this rocking tune. Many truths well expressed in this one.

@sbs
Brilliant lyrics! Well done! And, yeah, always worried about uploading the wrong version or see some glaring typo, etc in the video.
