#dailywritingprompt ('What Forever Feels Like') #girlwithukulele #folk #filk #fuc

I've been listening to the Silmarillion lately, so when I saw this prompt, I thought of the elves and their lives that last for all time, from the beginning of the world to the end. Of the stories of those few who are cursed to love mortals with their fleeting lives.

And so fell back to the stories of my own fantasy kingdom, 'Shoth', and created a new character for the song - a woman who wields the magic of the stars to travel to other worlds. In those places, she can spend a lifetime, while only a moment passes back home in Shoth. Of all the star mages, she has chosen to live forever, by living life after life, in other worlds. Like the elves, I think hers would be a tragic tale.

Since I was inspired by the works of a linguist, the bridge uses the #conlang I created for Shoth - it was developed by the animals who live alongside the humans there, and is not well suited to human speech (but humans there make do). I speak the translation after the bridge.

So there you go. Forever, in a moment. And a #fantasy world of star #magic. Written in the #dorian mode, because it should be (with a change to the relative #major for the chorus).

Lyrics

Forever in a Moment
Jemma Kline

Starlight, drawn in every hue,
All the memories of people that I knew,
Burning, shining like the sun,
But I’ll still be here when all their lives are done.

Forever, in a moment.
What if dreams could never end?
Forever, in a moment.
When it’s over, start again?

Starlight, woven and entwined,
Threads to lead me through the labyrinth of time,
To lifetimes, living each one through,
And the last one took me all the way to you.

Forever, in a moment.
What if dreams could never end?
Forever, in a moment,
When it’s over, start again?

Hush huhfose huthuth,
Ach hofe othe sose suph,
Thath suhsoth foeshoal,
Faf yuthoph yose hall.

I call the stars
That illuminate my path,
Spending years in that place,
A lifetime spent there.

Forever, in a moment.
What if dreams could never end?
Forever, in a moment,
When it’s over, start again?

Great take on immortality. And a very memorable catch phrase.

@gmcgath I took the basic approach from lessons I learned in a Dragon Magazine article in the 80s, of all things (at the time, I made a language for centaurs - I was young). I use a phonetics based approach, picking out sounds that are appropriate as building blocks. In this case, I used a lot of soft sounds, which doesn't really make for a great 'human' language - but it was designed for humans and animals to both use. For the vocabulary itself, I cheated and used a 'top 100 words' list and matched up combinations automatically, adjusting when they were too strange. I created it for both a novel and a LARP (for my kids at the time). It's far from perfect, but it's good enough for a novel or a game. Fun to finally put it to use.

Conlangs in songs are fascinating. This sample is too small to parse, but I still find myself looking for structure in it. I'm sure it's there.

I've never thought of using a uke as backing for an epic song but it works, doesn't it! I'm learning! Thankyou! On the song and lyrics, yes, immortality bounded by the mortal world is tragic when you stop and think about it. Which few do. You've done this well.
