Liner Notes

Even though a lot of these songs I'm finally polishing up were written awhile ago, this one feels positively ancient. Giving the date in my Notes a glance, it's *only* 2 years old, but I recorded everything save for some instruments like a year ago. This thing has been haunting my ears and dreams forever, it feels, so it's nice to get it out so I can move on.

I think I came up with the chorus first and worked around it after, and settled on the dreamy intro fairly quickly. This song is the foundation of the whole project, in my mind, and I continued to aim for that hazy, sad summer vibe from there on out.

Not to drone on and on, but I'm often struck by music and photos from my youth with great waves of sadness and loss. I was pretty into Midwestern Emo at the time (hence the "Never Meant" lyric tucked in there), almost as if I wanted to feel even sadder for shit that had never happened to me. Well, I can't play guitar, but I can write some sad-ass lyrics, so these are the results.

Finally, this track was designed to bleed into the next two tracks (I saw it as the start of a suite that kind of serves as a thesis statement for the whole project), so the next two songs will be better cut together at the end of this whole thing when I cut a finalized album track list. Right now they're not as cohesively welded together. Anyways, ramble over! Hope you enjoy!

Lyrics

Intro:
Oh take me back to Memory Lane,
This place is wrong.
Take me back home.

Verse 1:
We got in the car,
At a quarter past 10,
Rolled down the windows,
And whistled at the girls as we went.

We ran the streets,
That the cops didn't drive.
We'd play the music loud, and God,
We would feel so alive.

Stop at the corner store,
Just a little after 1,
Get kicked out for our version of
"Having a little fun".

Head to the fields,
With a bottle in tow,
Reminisce of all the times that we'll forget,
When we grow old.

Pre-Chorus 1:
You hear this again,
And again, and again.
It's not about "What",
It's all about "When".

Caught up in the moments,
That are holding you back.
Were they just a dream,
Were they just pretend?

Chorus 1:
I'm so afraid
That all my mistakes
Are all that I am,

All that I was,
And ever have been.

Verse 2:
I woke up in a sweat,
From the hot summer sun.
It was a quarter after 9,
And the weekend had only just begun.

I walked over bodies
And I called you again,
I told you I was sorry for all the
Shit that I said, but never meant.

Threading all the needles
Through the yards and the streets,
We made it back safely with just
Bruises and cuts on our knees.

We collapsed in the house,
And we cooled in the den,
We waited til the sun dropped,
And we did it all over again.

Pre-Chorus 2:
And I did it again,
And again, and again.
I wish that I knew,
What I don't understand.

I've heard all the stories,
Of nostalgia and pain,
So I'll stay in the dark,
On Memory Lane.

Chorus 2:
I promise, babe,
If you slip away,
Through my fingertips,

All of your secrets,
Are safe on my lips.

Years,
Passed through the cracks,
Fogged up the glass,
Now I can't recall,

If you laid me down gently,
Or allowed me to fall.

Bridge:
I remember my youth,
With the white picket fences.
The driveways were vacant,
And the windows were empty,

And I'm not even sure
If it happened at all.
I'm not even certain,
If I'm right or I'm wrong.

I wrote in the basement,
And I starved for the sun.
The times haven't changed,
But I'm no longer young.

Oh those memories
I wish I could have made.
With you,
I can forget my mistakes.

May the summer never end.
May the darkness relent,
Til we meet again.

I love that synth (?) in the beginning! Feels like opening up to a time before. Absolutely stunning work, your harmonies are always gorgeous. The vocals on "bottle" took my breath away. That first chorus is so raw and heartbreaking. "May the summer never end / May the darkness relent" is such a good line. Really wonderful work!

A long song, but certainly worth the listen!

Oh man I love that intro and the rest of the song is great too, the multilayered vocals and it's just well produced. I haven't seen the word anemoia since I used it in a song over three years ago. Seven minutes well spent, gonna have to check out more when I have time.
