Little Things
by @jtsteam
Liner Notes
This is sort of about your first day at work when you don't know where anything is, or even really what you're supposed to be doing. But, really, it's for my #neurospicy friends who, like me, are always making little blunders in unfamiliar social situations (and at least trying to learn not to do them again) while being told to use our common sense, whatever that is.
#ukulele and #harmonica #folk again. I can't keep the harmonica away at the minute.
Lyrics
[D][A][D]
[D]Opening and [A]closing cupboard [D]doors
[D]Check the storage [A]rooms on every [D]floor
[Bm]Who has the [F#m]key?
I [E]know it isn't [A]me
The [D]paper empty [A]light is flashing [D]green
[D]Cryptic message [A]on the little [D]screen
[Bm]Heads down at their [F#m]desk
Is [E]this some kind of a [A]test?
These [G]little things are [A]comfortable for [Bm]you
And [G]others find a [A]way to blunder [Bm]through
But I [G]didn't find it [F#7]in the FA[Bm]Q
I'm [G]sorry, I'm a[A]fraid I'm [D]new
I'm [D]sure that I did [A]everything you [D]asked
[D]What are these [A]other secret [D]tasks?
Did [Bm]someone make a [F#m]list?
Ins[E]tructions that I [A]missed?
These [G]little things are [A]obvious to [Bm]you
I [G]know that I'm [A]supposed to blunder [Bm]through
But if there's [G]something that [F#7]I forgot to [Bm]do?
I'm [G]sorry, I'm a[A]fraid I'm [D]new
And [C]instinctive as it might all be to [Em]you
[F]Understanding all those social [Am]cues
When [F]everyone knows everybody [C]else
And you [F]get away with acting like your[G]self[A7]
[D][A][D]
[D][A][D]
[Bm][F#m]
[E][A]
Still [D]sometime had to [A]teach you how to [D]walk
You [D]weren't born [A]knowing how to [D]talk
[Bm]Don't try to pre[F#m]tend
It's [E]only common [A]sense
These [G]little things we [A]all know how to [Bm]do
You [G]dress yourself, [A]tie up your [Bm]shoes
But [G]remember when you [F#7]didn't have a [Bm]clue
Like [G]everybody, [A]once you were [D]new
Re[G]member [A]once you were [D]new

The Guardian ran a piece on neurodiversity in the workplace recently and one of the people interviewed was saying that the tea round terrified them because they were worried they would get the social conventions wrong. So they didn't drink tea at work. I have been through several workplaces where for years people thought I don't like tea, for this very reason... and it never occurred to me that this is a neurodivergence thing. We live, we learn.
wonderful little song, wonderful performance! that uke has some gorgeous tone.
