Hole In The Wall

Liner Notes

Having problem with the sustain pedal on this - the midi seems to be stuck after the first run through of the verse chords for the rest of the song... and when I delete the sustain information it deletes the notes entirely. A bit random, but let's just go with that.

This started off a song about Jacob Rees-Mogg (man of the moment) that I started messing around with yesterday morning on my electric piano but that has now mutated into whatever this now is. It's nice to have some "real" MIDI rather than just piano roll but I'm insufficiently accurate and so had to massage the notes into a slightly more acceptable form anyway.

I was going for languid, cynical, crypic. That's my bag, baby. However it's probably insufficiently coherent to actually provoke any kind of emotional reaction in others.

Spot the bit of gratuitous Col Legno... because I am duty bound to try to wedge all the plug ins I can into a demo.

Also a lot of endings on this one, drag it out a bit. Not sure why I felt that was necessary. Just seemed nice.

Lyrics

She tried to live her life without hoping
Or dreaming too high
but that's no easy thing
For the living
There's nothing easy

You're just a means to an end
A nabob's little plaything
A hole in the wall
A keyfob on a keyring
A whole lifetime
But not this year

I tried to speak the truth
It ain't easy
When there's something to hide
So I have learned that I'm
Not the nice guy
Though still in my mind

He'll cry just a few
To show that he's no monster
They'll scatter like dew
A tribute to his sponsors
Next lifetime
But not you

You're just a means to an end
A nabob's little plaything
A hole in the wall
A keyfob on a keyring
A whole lifetime
But not this year
Summer who?

This was a lovely, moody, and languid rainy afternoon listen. I like how you take your time and relish singing the words. The backing vocal was a pretty touch. And the lyrics/characters are intriguing.
I looked up Clive Palmer/Banjoland. I want to listen to more.

I think you pulled off languid perfectly. I would love to hear this live in a lovely piano bar in NY. Really nicely performed.

I wish I could pull off languid, cynical and cryptic like this. I sort of lost the narrative thread about a third of the way in, but that’s kind of the point really. Was just left floating in the dreamy music and the gorgeous melody, occasionally surfacing to catch a clever line or two (‘a tribute to his sponsors’) before descending back into it. I mean this in a very complimentary way, it’s a lovely experience. Summer who indeed…

gorgeous piano track. you dont need excessive plug in. I love the way you stretch our some of youe words with long notes as well as the long melodic lines. the song is a totally original take on themes that have been touched on in songs like "A Well Respected Man," but you are more of a cynical brooder than an satirical humorist. i also like the indirect way you define this character. its not so cut and dry as the kinks would have it.all i all, one of my favorite songs so far in 50 90. very much looking forward to more.
