#idiom challenge

I went to find a list of idioms and clichés, and realized I could make pretty much a whole song out of them. Slight critique included in the bridge and chorus.

Lyrics

(Capo 2)
V1
D
Make hay while the sun shines
G D
Because hay smells bad when wet
D
Better safe than sorry
E A
You should give more than you get
D
The grass is always greener
G D
And ignorance is bliss
G D
I’ve heard these things a thousand times
A D
But they’re kind of hit-and-miss

Chorus
G D
Because you can’t judge a book by its cover
A D
And a leopard don’t change its spots
G D
The acorn doesn’t fall far from the tree
E A
And you don’t always call the shots
G D
Flattery will get you nowhere
A Bm A
Except sometimes, it will
G D
These sayings sound like wisdom
A D
But they’re all just grist for the mill

V2
Half a loaf is better than none
Read the writing on the wall
Handle it with kid gloves
The bigger, the harder they fall

A good man sure is hard to find
But there are good men, and true
You’ve heard these things a thousand times
Let’s give the Devil his due

CHORUS

Bridge
G
They sound right on the money
D
But let’s take it with a grain of salt
G
They’re just a quickie answer
E A A7
So you don’t feel like it’s your fault

V3
Well, that’s close, but no cigar
Don’t bite off more than you can chew
Good fences make good neighbors
You can make it good as new

These are pithy-sounding sayings
Sure, they have the ring of truth
But let’s be honest, shall we?
They’re getting long in the tooth

CHORUS

Outtro
G D
These sayings sound like wisdom
A D
But they’re all just grist for the mill

What a clever use of cliches! Rather than making the song sound tired, they make the song sound refreshing and amusing. Nice work!

I like this a lot. I sometimes notice that, for every saying, there seems to be an equal and opposite one. 😀

Love this! Such a fun listen, and so clever now you crafted this lyrically! Great job on the challenge!

I’m listening to your song with a toddler. She bounces along and said Again Again at the end. I like it a lot too.

Neat take on the challenge. You actually made salient points that consist mostly of patched-together sayings, that takes some thought. I agree with @hyssop , very fun and bouncy melody. And you sound great, both voice and guitar. Yay!

I love your approach to this challenge! It takes skill to arrange so many pre-set phrases into lyrics that flow so well, really magnificent work on your part. The melody is so catchy! Such a fun song!
