Liner Notes

#livecollab

JC: Nancy and I met up on the second Saturday of fawm, came up with lyrics and some music. Then I dragged my feet and everything else and forgot most of what we came up with except the lyrics. #freshstart! This was a lot of fun, as always and despite myself, and collaborating with Nancy is a treat. What didn't make the cut for your 'bucket list?'

NR: I had this title in my notebook, we brainstormed the lists, and John had the inspiration for the ending. (I never knew he longed to jump out of a plane!) John did the heavy lifting with the arrangement and mixing. This is my first recording with the kalimbatron, a homemade electric percussion board I inherited from Eric Agner, with many thanks to Patti.

JC: baritone guitar, vocals, GB sound effects
NR: drum track, bkgd vox, keys, more keys, kalimbatron sound effects

Lyrics

I’ve got a list of things I always meant to do
Here’s what I intend before my life is through

Go see the pyramids
Stand beneath the Perseids
Meet intelligent galactic life
Drink pina coladas
See Elvis in Nevada
He’ll say “now I pronounce you man and wife”
Sail in a hot-air balloon
See the dark side of the moon
Ride a barrel down Niagara Falls
Write a science fiction novel
Learn to keep time in a bottle
Hike the length of the Great Wall

Heckuva bucket list so far
But there are some holes and here they are:

Make the cut for Dancing with the Stars
Take my helmet off on Mars
Be an Oscar Meyer Weiner on TV (key change!)
Take a polar plunge
Amass a billion thumbs
So everybody’d want a bite of me

Parachute’s on -- they’re opening the door
10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4 …..

Lots of fun rhymes and lines here. In a parallel universe, it changes keys every three lines, forever going up and up and up and up and up and...

This is a ton of fun, the drive to the tune really gives it solid bones for the list approach. Excellent sounds, cool lyrics, great collab!

And I always want John's tunes to be about 50% longer, this one included 😎

I write a lot of list songs, but never with anywhere near this lyrical tightness. The items on the list and the syllabic flow by rights should work against each other, but they're in perfect synergy here.

The genre is fun. I enjoyed Nancy's contribution - somewhere between Kate Bush and Kate Pierson in effect.

The key change is unpredictable (despite the heads-up), yet effective.

Is the motif of the hole supposed to extend to the parachute? It would give the song a certain closure. Or perhaps recent events have shifted my Overton window towards morbid.

This is great! So many wonderful as well as quirky items on the collaborative bucket list! The instrumental backdrop and percussion/drums are fabulous but it is the melody and vocal delivery with its layers that really make me smile!

The title and concept are great, and the lyrics execute them perfectly. The music is fun and well-performed. Fantastic collab. I really enjoyed it.

Fun collab! I wanna go too!

The modulation is perfect.

As always excellent lyrics and music, and a wonderful performance. Made me smile of lot for which I thank you both.

Such a fun song! I love the ending. you captured me with the title. Something fun about holes in my bucket list. I think my bucket's holes are so big the list has fallen out!

Bucket lists, the ultimate FOMO.
Excellent lyrics again, the doubled vocals work a treat, catchy tune.
Love the Elvis wedding inclusion. 😎

What a terrific alt-pop piece. The vocals (both lead and background) are *perfect* for the piece. The cheerful musicality is just a joy to listen to.

Love the concept. The list of increasingly outlandish bucket list items had me grinning. Well executed key change, and the ending countdown is *chef's kiss*
