Dinner Of Dirt

Liner Notes

#alternative

The foundation of this song came out of an early February session creating quick 'sketches' of songs by recording piano/vocals for an hour or so. The song has been through 3 choruses until settling on the one you hear here.

Lyrics were a bit of a slog - had some lines that worked and then tried filling in the gaps to get a coherent narrative. Not sure it's there yet, and the more I hear the "where clouds can't see" line the more I hate it!

Taking the "Let it fester and maybe come back to it" approach.

Lyrics

Dinner of dirt
Sat there drowning in an oversized shirt
Bathed in the glow, watching reruns of your favourite show

The echo of what’s been
Doesn’t fit with what you’ve seen
The fog clouding you and It’s…

got to go free
Just like you and the air you breathe
Skip the dessert
Save yourself for the meaningless work

Life it’s like a stream
You’ve got to dam it before you scream
Less is always more
Before when

I stopped putting on my make-up
Now that i don’t need to
Hide my face from you
where clouds can’t see

Dinner of dirt
Does it hurt when you crunch down on rocks
Show signs of thirst when you drink from your open purse

Life it’s like a dream
You’ve got to wake up before you scream
Severance is silence
All the time…

I stopped putting on my make-up
Now that i don’t need to
Hide my face from you
where clouds can’t see

Stand by the door
Stuck to the floor
Reaching my hand out
and turning the latch
Stepping outside and the dark skies are clearing (for me)

Life it’s like a scream
Crashing straight thru your blood stream
Inheritance is tolerance
so…

I stopped putting on my make-up
Now that i don’t need to
Hide my face from you
where clouds can’t see

‘Cause

I stopped standing at the bus stop
Holding on to tear drops
Saving them for you….
(and only you ‘cause you’re my sweetest dish)

Cool groove here, particularly the verses with that tom-laden drum part. The melody on the pre-chorus (? - "the life it's like a dream" bit) is so good. Probably my favourite bit of the song. Just grabs you by the collar and pulls you in. Metaphorically, obviously. And then chorus lifts off with an injection of oomph. Definitely one to come back you when there's more time.
