Sashimi

Liner Notes

That feeling when...

You're trying to be a respectful, calm human during a heated conversation (usually about politics) with someone that CLEARLY has no f*ing clue what they are talking about. You know that feeling? Yeah, that's this song.

The chorus is about the invisible bias we all carry around. And all the little triggers, buttons and chips we take with us into every interaction.

Humans, eh!? What a bunch of beautiful weirdos.

Lyrics

VERSE ONE
I’ve lost my tounge and dialect
Words pull like wire round my neck
Overthinking every scentence I say
Cos you love talk over me
You know things but that don't make you wise
Just cos you know things don't mean they're not lies

VERSE TWO
I’m fact checking the sound from your lips
Your notes on history have slipped
It hard to listen to you confuse the dots
When tik tok is all that you watch
Just think the logic through yourself
Because, you know, this ignorance well it's really bad for my health!

PRE CHORUS
But I’m trapped in this japanese restaurant
Looking at the time scratching out my eyes

CHORUS
There are ghosts
Living on in our blood
Living on in our blood
They speak their words through the night
They only live outside the light
And they wait for one of us to break down
To break and start a fight

VERSE THREE
I attempt to be adult and mature
But I just keep boiling over you
Slam another sashimi in my mouth
This train wreck is quickly going south
Take the floor but be wise with your time
Cos I won’t be repeating this infuriating pantomime!

PRE CHORUS
We’re still in this japanese restaurant
Itching to get home, but still so long to go

Big fan of your cadence in the verses, the little stops in some words - really good and captivating! Nice big chorus with those backing vocals. It's almost like Paramore or something but maybe a little more classic rock.

I have had that chorus stuck in my head for the twelve hours since I first heard this. It's just... perfect. The image of bias as ghosts, the power in those soaring vocals, the flippin' BACKGROUND VOCALS holy hell.

The verses have their own laundry-list of cool attributes. The little vocal squeal at the beginning of each line perfectly conveys the exasperation of arguing with a blank wall. It's just so good. You've taken your first FAWM by storm - wow.

The entire concept

I absolutely adore an audible Scottish accent in a singing voice. This is really strong, an incredibly catchy/powerful chorus and an urgency that kicks ass.

I don’t like pigeon holing coz you are very versatile but you have a gritty Amy McDonald feel. This is such a complete full song! Very good! That organ smashes through!

Nailed it again. :). Always with the top notch writing and production. Still amazed how fast you come up with awesome lyrics

Total banger! So much so I’m not really sure where to start. Let’s say the chorus - which is insanely catchy and anthemic. Love how you situate the whole thing in the Japanese restaurant, so clever because it grounds a fairly philosophical subject in a place that you can instantly visualise. The production is magnificent, stunning vocals (love some of the little doubles you throw in to accent certain words), huge but focused and punchy guitars, and that drop before the chorus is chef’s kiss. Also loving how you lean into your accent in the verses. Oh, and ‘Sashimi’ is a brilliant song title. In any sane world this would be a hit.

Oh yes, this one smashes it out of the park! Wanted to hear some synth hammond in the first chorus build up, second goes more energy and the end really blasting. Can hear the heavy sound guitars and drums. Great singing!
