4 chords and the truth! 4 chords and the truth!

I have a sneaking suspicion I ripped off the chorus but I can't for the life of me remember from where

Lyrics

if i say I’ll do your dishes
cos I like the way you feed me
and I feel like i owe you
for the way you’ve shown me kindness
can I help it?

if I go to buy you coffee
cos you always make it for me
and I want you to know you
shouldn’t stop is that a form of
being selfish?

selfishly

i want you to love me

I want you to know
you are a little miracle
a butterfly in a basement
don’t you fly away

i want to be the one
you can curl up upon
selfishly I want
to make you stay

if I listen to your stories
cos I like the way you smile
and the way you touch my shoulder
feels very much a kind
of weakness

when you hold me
I am greedy for that comfort
and I want so much more of it
i am willing to do anything
to keep it

selfishly

i want you to love me

I want you to know
you are a little miracle
a butterfly in a basement
don’t you fly away

i want to be the one
you can curl up upon
selfishly I want
to make you stay

I adore the way the vocals thrum like a heartbeat and then float like a butterfly - much like the ones you invoke.

The cadence is perfect for a song like this, where disparate thoughts gather and swirl, unified under the prevailing desire to be loved, and the meditation that, yes, love is a game of give and take, but we'd hate to lose the 'take' part...

Wow. "A butterfly in a basement" caught me by surprise and held me there. The soft, innocent vocal tone is gorgeous. I can't say I hear where you may have "borrowed" the chorus. The closest thing I can hear is a similarity to the prechorus in Corrine Bailey Rae's "Put Your Records On", when you go into "Selfishly..." As far as I'm concerned you're good to go. :-) Great song.

Love this little love ditty - perfect for this icy cold morning - I love the simplicity of your vocals and your choices of simple lilting bits are so deceptively simple. You have such a gift. -ru

Glorious. Love the lower-register rhythmic verse into the soaring, fluid chorus. I don't think it rips anything off, maybe it reminds me a little of an Olivia Rodrigo track but I can't remember which

‘A butterfly in a basement’ ! Wow what a line! Vocal melody on the chorus is beautifully performed.

Those long run-on lines in the verse are so damned cool, as is the way you use the looseness of the rhyme scheme. It's like thoughts tumbling out in a barely contained rush of honesty.

The muted plucked chords sound so good with the soft, breathy vocals. And then that vocal flourish heading I to the harmonized chorus is just amazing. In with @wrenarcher on this: it could be the b-side demo that acts as a satisfying acoustic counterpoint to a highly produced album. Those are always my favorite.

wow when you hit "selfishly" your vocals just soared. And then the harmonies after were so good. This was really well done. Less is more, and in this case it absolutely is.

It's amazing to me how people can come up with something so unique from using just three... four chords. Dang, Kaeli this is just amazing.

The sentiment of the lyrics is so, so sweet. And the simplicity of the arrangement with just your voice and bass makes the whole song shine. I absolutely love the melody of the prechorus and the harmony in the chorus is divine. I love it. And if you subconsciously boosted i sure don't know where. I don't recognize it.

But I love every bit of this song. This sounds like one that would be the last track on an album of yours where the other songs are so complex and dripping in production and then this sweet, simple song as a punctuation mark.

This is just wonderful. Gonna listen again. ☺️
